[SOLVED] Windows Update will not let me install SP1

Hi, NickMalatos. Welcome to Sysnative.

  • Please download the System Update Readiness Tool from Microsoft ->here<-. Save the tool to a convenient location as it may be necessary to run it again.
  • After the download has completed, double-click the file and wait while it initializes.
  • Click Yes to begin installation.

Although the System Update Readiness Tool automatically fixes problems for installing Windows Updates, it does not solve them all. However, the resultant log should provide the information needed in order to solve the problem you are having. To provide the log, please do the following:

  • Navigate to C:\Windows\Logs
  • Copy the entire CBS folder to your desktop.
  • Right-click the copied CBS folder on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Please upload the zipped file with our next reply.

Hello, and welcome to Sysnative :)

Thank you very much for uploading those logs. You have done very well indeed.

I have discovered the problem in those logs, and it looks perfectly fixable.

However, before I start, I would like to confirm that there are no other problems, so that I can fix everything in one go.

Could you please look back at Corrine's post above, and attempt to run the System Update Readiness Tool again? It would be extremely helpful if I can get it to run. All you need to do is download and install it from here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/What-is-the-System-Update-Readiness-Tool

Corrine has given more detailed instructions. It will probably take 45minutes to 1hour to run. You may use your computer for other tasks whilst it is running.

If you have any problems running it, or require any further instructions, please do not hesitate to ask. We are here to help :)

After it has finished, please upload a new copy of your CBS folder.

Thank you, and good luck!

Richard

Hello again :)

Thanks for doing that for me. I have now taken a look over your logs, and we are good to go.

I am going to have to make this fix in a couple of parts. For this reason, you will probably not see an immediate improvement after just this post. Please don't be disheartened, and stick with me.

This post itself will also be in several parts. If you ever get stuck or require further explanation, please just stop and ask.

Some of the steps in this post may be quite complicated. Always stop and ask if you need help understanding something. Also, if you are not confident performing one of the steps, stop and ask for a simpler alternative, which there often is. However, you seem fairly competent in using computers, which is why I am giving you these quicker, but slightly more complicated methods.

WARNING: This fix has been designed specifically for NickMalatos. If you are not NickMalatos, do not follow these instructions, as you may cause harm to your computer.

Excellent, introductory spiel posted. Onto the fix :) Click to enlarge images.

Click Start > Search for regedit > right click on regedit.exe > select Run as Administrator

Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, and look for a subkey called COMPONENTS

If you find it, jump to part one of the fix. If you do not find it, you must make it appear:

Single click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE,

go to the File Menu > Load Hive... > navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config > select the COMPONENTS file (the one without a file extension - i.e. NOT COMPONENTS.log or similar, just COMPONENTS >

Click Open > Give it a key name of COMPONENTS > OK.

Now the COMPONENTS subhive should appear as in the first screenshot.

Now, remaining in regedit, go:

File > Export > Selected Branch: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Components\CanonicalData\Deployments

Now give it a sensible name (such as export1.reg, but any other will do just fine), save it somewhere convenient and you can later find, and click Save.

After exporting this registry key, you may close regedit. Now find the file you just created, right click on it > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.

You will now create a new .zip file. I want you to upload a copy of this new .zip file.

I know that these instructions are complicated. Please take your time, and ask as many questions as you need to. I am here to help you every step of the way.

This won't actually fix your problem, it is just collecting a final piece of information so I can proceed with fixing in the next post. Complicated fixes require careful planning and execution :)

Good luck!

Richard

No problem :)

Basically, I am trying to track down the exact location of a corruption. I know what the corruption looks like, but I don't know exactly where it is...there are about four possible locations. Please bear with me, and soon I should have it nailed down. Once found, the fix is easy :)

Please re-open regedit, re-load the COMPONENTS hive if necessary, and then export this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS\DerivedData\Components

The techniques used should be exactly the same as in the above post, but for this new "selected branch".

Please don't hesitate to ask any questions though.

Thanks!

Richard

Just in Case you didn't notice my reply, I'm bumping the thread

Hello Nick,

I am very sorry for the delay.

You have a rather curious problem which is not as simple as it first appears. The System Update Readiness Tool appears to be mis-categorising your particular error. You have reported a 6 CSI Missing Deployment Key errors, but on inspection of the deployment key, there appears to be no corruption.

I am attempting to reproduce this error on a development machine to work out other possible causes for this error, apart from the obvious "missing deployment key", which you appear not to have.

I will post a second reply to you tomorrow, a plan B, if I have not been able to contact anyone who might know about this, reproduce the issue myself, or figure it out.

I thank you for your continued patience,

Richard

Hello again Nick :)

Your issue is proving to be rather troublesome. However, after a lot of digging, I have uncovered one more potential cause. Fingers crossed this is your issue. If this isn't it, we will approach from a slightly angle, which should nail it. Anyway, can you please export one final key for me: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide\Winners

Thank you so much for being so patient. You had a rather unique issue, and I really hope this pins it down.

Richard

I was just gifted a full version of Windows 8 64 Bit, thank you for your help, but I no longer require it.

I am really glad that your problems are now resolved. Sorry that I couldn't be of more help.

I hope you like your Windows 8. It takes a few days to get used to, but once you do, you should love it. Everything works super fast, and it only takes a little time to find out what has changed.

Happy Holidays :)

Richard
