windows update error 80070057

Hi, although all other updates with windows auto updater installs without issue. Windows service pack1 always fails with error 80070057. I tried a manual download but install failed with error: ERROR_INVALID-PARAMETER(0x80070057). after trolling the web I tried sfc /scannow which came up with the following

sorry don't know how to make a zip file) I thought I was been clever when I followed some instructions to takeover own the first corrupt file: regsvr32.exe however when I had successfully took it over, the next stage told me to replace it with a known good file. I didn't have one or knew how to get one and now I dont know how to give back control of the file.

I have an OEM win 7 disc and have read somewhere that I cant use it to repair the corrupt files?

Not sure if this is causing the problem with the updater? my IE9 also freezes regularly (use F5 a lot) and it would not let me upgrade to IE10?

That looks great, Martin! All replacement went through successfully, and the regsvr32.exe permissions & ownership have been fixed. :)

Based on that result, can I add in one more step at some point? Please re-run sfc /scannow. You can do it at the same time as SURT downloading or installing. Ideally, please run SFC again before collecting the CBS logfiles so I can check the logfiles for SFC at the same time.

Hi Richard, the CBS.zip folder is over 10Mb, the website only allows file attachments of just over 7MB. Any suggestions how we can get round this please?

I am so sorry about the delay. I was unable to source one of the files. Fortunately, I've managed to overcome that [I downloaded every single VC++ update currently available on the download center, extracted each one, and cataloged their contents. I found the file and I've now got a nice catalog for future cases :) ]

Next SFCFix script attached. Please do exactly as you did before and post the new log.

tried to download SP1 and it failed half way through install with same error code. I did a clean re boot and tried again, same problem. have copied CBS log on sky drive here:

Can you please try the Fix-It here: You receive a "0x80070002" or "0x80070003" error code after you download an update from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or from Windows Server Update Services

in Aggressive Mode. Not the pop-up troubleshooter, but the embedded Fix-It. (I know it doesn't list your error, but there's a good chance it applies anyway - I don't know whether or not you've already tried this Fix-It, but that is irrelevant as I need it to have been run after the previous fixes)

Hi Richard, ran the aggressive fix. I ran auto update, after a while it found the SP1, I ran install and it downloaded the file Ok but failed again about half way through installing with same error: code 80070057. Ran the system readiness tool after install attempt:

Aha! I've finally found the lead I was looking for/missing in the logs. No guarantee it will come to anything, butI've got something to go on now, no matter how small. Please delete the folder C:\629be02b735e0c04688e0c, and any similarly named folders.

Found one folder with similar string of numbers, nearly 40,000 files-3.24Gb-deleted :) Done a general CCleaner clean up then tried to install SP1 again. Failed again smae place same code. I didn't reboot after deleting and cleaning, before trying to install update?
