My system just freezes randomly. I have to manually press the reset or hold the power button.
No intensive tasks at all, no heat. Also been using the PC while running driver verifier and nothing wrong happened.

Windows 8.1, x64
· Probably full retail, bought if from a pc shop which assembled the machine.
· Age of system: Roughly 1-2 years
· Age of OS installation: couple of months

· CPU i7 3770K
· AMD 7970 vapor-x
· MotherBoard ASUS P8Z77-M
· PSU Seasonic 850w gold

You have 3 hard drives. What is the age of your Power Supply?

There are enough signs here that I have to wonder about this installation. Should this be a pirated copy of Windows, please be aware that we may not be able to fix it (as the hacks that were done to activate it will cause the OS to behave differently than we expect it to). If that's the case, our efforts to help may just waste your time. Secondly, the forum rules prohibit assisting with pirated software - so the topic would be closed if that is the case.

Please provide the MGADiag report according to these instructions (from this post: Product Key Number - Uninstall and Deactivate in Windows - Page 3 - Windows 7 Help Forums ):
To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.

Hello usasma!

I have one SSD and one 2 TB HDD. The 3rd one was a usb external drive. PSU is probably 1 year old.
Are you thinking it could be hardware-related?

I don't think it's pirated. The work was done at a reputable shop and I was charged for the "windows software".
That microsoft utility, I can't copy the contents. It says failed to create output files. Should I post a screenshot?

Anyways, did you see anything else wrong at all inside my pc's logs?

The questions that I first post are due to things that I see in the reports that you've uploaded. In the case of the hard drives, I always ask about the PSU when I see 3 or more hard drives on one system.

Try this report instead:
License Information (Windows 8)

  1. Right click on the
    aa922834-ed43-40f1-8830-d5507badb56c_39.jpg
    button
  2. Click on Command prompt =>
  3. Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following command
    licensingdiag.exe -report "%userprofile%\Desktop\report.txt" -log "%userprofile%\Desktop\repfiles.cab"
  4. Once finished please go to your desktop -> You will see two files report.txt and repfiles.cab -> Please select both files and add them into a zip file
  5. Upload this zip file to your next reply

Only 91 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 100 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

Lot's of problems that can be attributed to piracy - I would guess that fixing those will most likely fix your system

MalwareBytes and Avast may conflict (if you've installed the trial for the Pro version). If so, please uninstall MalwareBytes

MSI Afterburner (along with Riva Tuner and EVGA Precision) is known to cause BSOD's (also could cause freezing) in some Windows systems (it's driver is usually RTCore64.sys). Please un-install them immediately!

If you're overclocking, please stop the overclock while we're troubleshooting. Feel free to resume the overclock once the system has been stabilized.

Also, please provide this report:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here: Windows Kernel event ID 41 error "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first" in Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008 R2

While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility: HWMonitor CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

- Malwarebytes is not the pro version. I made sure not to install the trial for the pro.

- I use the MSI afterburner to slightly overclock the GPU and MAINLY for creating a custom fan curve, so the fans won't spin as fast without reason. (ie no heat or intensive graphics). Will uninstall it but do you have an alternative for that?

- Overclocking to CPU is not intensive. Also, the freezing is completely random, most of the time it's just browsing internet or looking for files, so not stressing it at all. Will turn it off too.

- The only update left I had hidden is the "Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB3000850)", which completely broke my system. Couldn't restart, couldn't change settings, was a mess. In case you are wondering, it crashed before that update as well.

- Will keep monitoring temps but room is air-conditioned and I haven't been running CPU intensive task at all. I do play some LOL but I wouldn't consider that intensive for a 7970, right.

- I had just wiped the event viewer so I could narrow the causes down. So it's pretty small but the next day, crashed again, so I think all the information regarding it will be there anyways.

Here's the report result:

Since it freezes in OS, the most simple test you can do is, check if it doesn't outside OS (which also counts as ram test too). I have the usb bootable memtest86+ below, you can go to it's page and get the iso if you want to burn it to a cd. Once you boot inside memtest you do nothing, just let it run. People say leave it for 8 hours 12, 24, whatever or 8 passes the standard. Size of the ram affects how much time is gonna take to finish 1 pass, so a 2gb ram guy will finish the 8 pass thing in 1 hour and a 32gb guy will do it in 40 hours.

*USB bootable* memtest86+ run it for 24 hours!!! since you have freeze problem--> www.memtest.org/download/5.01/memtest86+-5.01.usb.installer.zip

If it freezes, shutdown pc and disconnect every sata cable connected to the mobo (optical drives, SSD, HDD) also remove the power cable from them, to not let them blind run), then re-run. If it freezes again post it here. (sata cables get destroyed, if you over angle them, or with a lil force from zip ties) (also before removing the sata cables or anything inside the case always shutdown the pc and remove the power cord from the psu, then press the power button on your case while psu is disconnected to discharge every remaining power inside capacitors)

*If you get errors in Memtest, then you have ram issues (most of the time)

To check HDD health only, in OS really accurate--> www.harddisksentinel.com/hdsentinel_pro_setup.zip (trial 30 days, you only need it for 5 mins so doesn't matter)
it's simple once you run it, you only want to check the health bar, anything below 100% means that the drive is losing sectors. Performance bar means nothing.
There are no accurate tools to check the SDDs as far as i know, they just die out of the blue. HDD sentinel readings for SSDs are inaccurate!!!

Random freezing/bluescreen was well known with a lot of (OLD)sandforce driven SSDs, most common brand was the OCZ vertex series, and no mention on the ssd brand/model/firmware you have.

Meanwhile, if the OS is cracked, it can affect a lot of things. But ONLY happens with modified pre-cracked ISO. i want to explain it more deeply, but it would look like "tips how to get it right". Reputable shop DO install cracked windows all over the world, i talk as an insider. If you don't pay for it, or you don't see any sticker on your case then you are (bad) cracked.

Thanks Pootis, that was great :)

I have already cleaned the machine, disconnected/reconnected everything and it froze again after that.

Actually I had run memtest already just when I first bought the memories. It was 1 year ago roughly, don't think they got bad. haha (2x 8GB corsair vengeance with the black metal thing on top.

HDD are fine, I have tested them with more than 1 utility, says 100%, perfect condition. It's a CRUCIAL M500, latest firmware. It's pretty new too.

I don't want to believe in that pre-cracked OS stuff. It's gonna make me pissed to get back to the shop and deal with that right now. I would like to rule out everything possible first, from software to drivers to hardware

@usasma, is TRIXX okay to use?

if you have the cd key ----> go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=510815 It's the official windows 8.1 download tool, Windows 8.1 - Windows 8.1N - Windows 8.1 Pro - Windows 8.1 ProN options: 32/64bits also all languages.

You can make USB tool, or save it as ISO.

Another thing, did the freezing started after you installed the ssd? 1 quick google search shows a serious number of freezing reports come from the specific M Series.

SSD is probably 4-6 months old. I really can't remember if it happened before. But could I tell if it's the SSD for sure? Are there any fixes?

And what do you suggest I do? I didn't want to reinstall the OS on my own. I don't know for sure if I can do it and worse, I have no time to do it and then reinstall all I have back again.

Imagine if it's not the OS, then I install all I have right now and end up with the same issues. That would be sad.

Hello again :),

I don't think it's pirated. The work was done at a reputable shop and I was charged for the "windows software".

I hate to say this but if you paid for a Windows license then you have been ripped off.

The licensing report that was request by usasma is showing that the machine is activated using the KMS method, the lines in blue below shows that:

In order for a machine to be eligible for KMS activation your machine needs to be part of a network that has 25+ computers. I would be going to speak to your computer shop and asking for a refund or a legit sealed Windows 8 disc. Along with reporting them to Microsoft: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/howtotell/cfr/Report.aspx.

Alex

1 google/amazon search yesterday for like 20 mins, showed a huge numbers of freeze. Sometimes it was causing phantom crashes with no errors. "crucial M500 no matter the size"

1 quick thing to do, is to install the OS in the HDD, while you have completely disconnected the ssd from the PC, to not mess up with the sata controller.

And the thing is that you don't want to re-run memtest86+, you said you run it 1 year ago to test the new rams, but now you have the problems. If memtest doesn't show errors for like 8 passes, then start thinking the crucial m500 is the real cause. As a user of SSDs since generation 1, i assure you that ssds can cause a lot of bad things, not every ssd tho! years passed and the real brands showed up. Like in the HHD world, Hitachi has the less dead terabytes per year, Western Digital is close to Hitachi and Seagate is at the bottom with the worst fail rate than both Hitachi and Western Digital combined, the choice in HHDs is obvious as Hitachis most of the time come pre-installed in laptops or business PCs, your only solid choice is Western Digital, for ssds the brands that shine inside the endless ssd choices are Samsung and Intel, why? cause both of these companies make their controllers themselves, so no fatal errors, from "sandforce-like" controllers or any other fail one.

We've already narrowed this down to the shop using a terribly buggy activator on his system to illegitimately activate Windows. It's throwing errors frequently, so it's likely contributing to the crashes. Even if it's not, we unfortunately cannot offer help for a counterfeit system.

As the OS is likely to be pirated, I am closing this topic.
Feel free to start another post once the issue with the piracy is cleared up.
If you have questions about this, feel free to PM me.
