Hello :)

I have just noticed that my screen317 security check reports an out of date version of Java. However, as far as I know, I run no version of Java at all on this computer. Neither Uninstall a Program nor Revo show any version of Java, which I believe to be correct.

I am guessing this is to do with my Javascript stuff? I am not concerend by it, just wondered whether this is a known issue.

Thank you!

P.S. I do not believe that I am infected, there is absolutely no indication of any infection on this computer, I am just asking about Java.

P.P.S. Doesn't it detect Opera? I definitely have Opera installed...

Hi Richard,

As there's no version number given for Java, my guess is that it's the default (as it is for Mozilla's Plugin update checker).

However on running it on my PC, it looks like you may have some Java leftover that's been detected

I don't have Opera (or Chrome, it did hitch a ride yesterday with Google Earth but I immediately uninstalled it).

Thank you very much for your reply! I shall see if I can find any fragments.

I also dislike Chrome and the way everyone seems to think it is so amazing. Never use it, and never will. IE man here :p

Hi, Richard.

No, SecurityCheck doesn't look for Opera. I'll ask screen317 if he has considered adding it.

Was Java installed on the computer at one time? If so and you don't find any remnants, post a DDS log.

Speaking about fragments, I know with all the things you do, you're constantly downloading files/deleting them, etc. However, your computer would be snappier if you'd run the defrag tool, unless your hard drive is SSD.

Thanks for your post Corrine!

Yes, it was installed at one stage, so fragments are likely (both late version 6 and early version 7).

And thanks for the tip, but it is an SSD. And I do defragment my large storage disk from time to time, but thanks for the keen eyes :)

It may only be necessary to delete the folders often left over with Java uninstall:

C:\Program Files\Java
C:\Users\%UserName%\AppData\LocalLow\Sun

When using JavaRa, check the settings as it was mentioned elsewhere that someone ran JavaRa after uninstalling Java to clean up the leftovers, only to have it install the latest version. I haven't confirmed that as I haven't used Java in several years.

It's a shame Java doesn't get updated automatically over Windows Update - it would save us all a lot of hassle...

As long as it comes in native Windows Update package format rather than Windows Installer package via Windows Update, otherwise that causes me a lot of hassle!

@Corrine: Thanks for the warning. I think I have actually found the remnant. The uninstall key someone got left over even though the rest of the program has gone. But, and here is why it doesn't show up in normal Add/Remove Programs or Revo, it has been marked for completion of uninstall over a reboot. It wouldn't surprise me if I actually caused that. I quite often delete my transaction logfiles testing some Windows Update thing or other out, so if it was deleted over a reboot as a transaction, it could have been my fault it never got deleted.

I need to restart my computer to be sure though, but I have a Linux distro downloading at the moment so I don't really want to restart right now.

But I think this will soon be solved. Thanks again for all of your help.

Richard

@Corrine: For info, the newest version of JavaRa Cleanup goes something like this:

Step 1: It finds and recommends you run the uninstaller if available.
Step 2: Allows you to perform a manual cleanup using its own database.
Step 3: Offers you the chance to download and install latest version of Java. I just clicked Next through this step.
Step 4: Complete.

@All: It turns out this was not a remnants problem after all (although JavaRa did find two - sadly, I don't know what two, and I wasn't monitoring at the time thinking there would be a log, which there wasn't). Anyway, it was caused by my Javascript Tooling:
