Oracle VM VirtualBox 5.0 Officially Released!

VirtualBox Website

It was about time! :) As soon as I get home tonight, I'm upgrading to 5.0 and testing my VMs to see if they're all still working and see what are the new features.

For some reasons, I have always found Hyper-V nice. Even VMWare is good. Maybe the interface for VirtualBox does not look good to me...

I always found VirtualBox to be slow. Could have just been me, but I wasn't too fond of it.

I've always reasonably liked Virtual Box. It's nice and simple and easy to use. Hyper-V by comparison.... I think Hyper-V resets the standards others must strive for and makes any of them look good ;)

It's not that it's bad - it's not (in fact, it's very good) - it's just that everything you do, whether it's configuring the machine for the first time, figuring out the control panels, making the internet work, is just way more complex than it needs to be. It'd be great if the management console got a few minor UI tweaks.

Once setup though it seems to work reasonably well. In fact it's the only virtualization program I can use on this computer so I do use it a fair amount and it does the job well enough.

I'm actually moving all my VM's away from VMWare Player to Hyper-V in Windows 8.

As much as I've liked VMWare I've been having a lot of issues with it lately.

@Masterchiefxx17: Everything went smoothly. When I opened VirtualBox and used the "Check for updates" feature, it says that I had the most up-to-date version. So I downloaded VirtualBox 5.0 directly from their website and ran it, the installer upgraded my current installation without any issues. All my VMs opened correctly and I'm still playing with them a bit before trying the new features (mostly updating them and taking new snapshots).

@blueelvis: Currently facing an issue where I am not able to enable Hyper-V. When I enable it, it restart twice saying "Enabling new features..." but both times it ends up failing. But I'm sure the issue is this:

@Jared and @blueelvis: How do you guys find VirtualBox slow?

All of you makes me want to use Hyper-V so badly now haha :P

Did you try increasing the Filter Driver limit as proposed in that Stackoverflow link?

Maybe you have some other problem? How about you start a thread in the Windows Update sub forum so that it could be resolved? Although it is actually a good idea to create a thread, how about I just say the word "Irony"?

I have found VirtualBox slower because I wanted to see the default registry entries for Windows Vista OS. I provisioned a VM on Azure with Windows 8.1 and then installed Virtual Box in it (I know it sounds ridiculous) after a lot of tweaking. So, I fire up Windows Vista VM and then the setup stalls in the mid. I can do everything with Virtual Box but that setup was frozen.

I have found it to be slow on other *normal* occasions as well for example the amount of time taken to get a VM with Operating System installed running.

So you basically installed a VM on a VM and then complain about it for being slow? :P Did you try installing VirtualBox on your computer directly and manage VMs from there? Mine are all quite decent when it comes to speed and performance :) And yeah I'll try that Registry trick soon... I'm lazy :P

Well, I tried the Registry solution and it didn't work. Still fails to enable properly.

Finally managed to enable Hyper-V on my system after Brian's help. I'll give it a go tonight by creating a VM and see how it goes! :)

It could be beneficial for the future visitors if you post the solution here ;)

It's posted in a thread in an hidden section, I'll request it to be moved in the general Windows Update section :)

It seems that you cannot use VirtualBox when Hyper-V is enabled on a system... :/

I know lol. That's why I'm somewhat reluctantly using Hyper-V as it is. I need it enabled for the Visual Studio Windows Phone Emulator to work, and that means I can't use any other VPC software.

I had to uninstall Kaspersky Internet Security 2015 to enable it too. Now none of my VirtualBox VMs (and I have a few of them) works. I cannot be bothered to create them all over again in Hyper-V. Maybe I can import their virtual hard drive, but the drivers from the VirtualBox Guest Addition Tools probably won't work on Hyper-V and they might refuse to boot.

What to do! :P
