Summary: Eugene Kaspersky believes Apple Mac OS X is 10 years behind Microsoft Windows in terms of security.
He believes Cupertino will have to go through the security overhaul that Redmond once did.

Kaspersky Lab last week detailed why the increasing market share of the Apple Mac means more malware on the platform. Eugene (Yevgeny) Kaspersky, co-founder and CEO of the security firm, has now gone further while attending the Infosecurity Europe 2012 conference.

“I think [Apple] are ten years behind Microsoft in terms of security,” Kaspersky told CBR. “For many years I’ve been saying that from a security point of view there is no big difference between Mac and Windows. It’s always been possible to develop Mac malware, but this one was a bit different. For example it was asking questions about being installed on the system and, using vulnerabilities, it was able to get to the user mode without any alarms.”

Same thoughts as Temmu here...

The way I think of it...

There is a storm of malware brewing out at sea of which will hit every system on the east coast. No longer is it specific to one region; now everywhere must be prepared for the worst...

Windows has experience and have already installed and deployed their hurricane shutters while Macs are left to weather the storm alone...

Only after the storm has passed will they be able to pick up what's left and prepare for the next storm...

The next decade will bring a new life to cyber security on all platforms...

There is the mindset of Apple users that they "dont get malware" Most users may have become complacent about their malware protection and then run Windows (hopefully win 7 and not XP/IE6) in bootcamp.

Not just limited to Apple users either!

Correct, any mass produced OS is in danger...

Smaller OSs like some linux builds should not be in as much of danger as it would have to be a specific attack to their system.

A competent user running a truly unique build of linux will only be affected by attacks specifically made for his machine...

Note that there is no truly unique linux build they all over lap in some places and a sophisticated virus may be able to scan and cause havoc that way....

If you would like to carry on this discussion I can bring Wmorri in, he is my linux expert at TSF :grin1:

I did not know that...

If we have users passionate about OSs other then windows I will gladly open a subforum for them to discuss...

I doubt they'd find it necessary. The BATL forum has been active since 2003.
