Thank you. After reviewing I think we need to go a different direction. I had you make a backup of your registry hives with the Regback program.

Step#1 - Replace Manually
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config
2. Right-click on the current COMPONENTS file and select rename. Rename it to COMPONENTS.bad2.
Note: If you get an error that the file is in use, reboot your computer and then try again.
3. Take the COMPONENTS file from your RegBack backup paste it into C:\Windows\System32\config

Let me know when this is complete and we will continue.

Hello Brian,

this is the first time that I am a little bit concerned about the step you advise me: Since I just repaired the IE9 functionality at least partially you now want me to copy a registry part that is more than two weeks old into the current running system.
The system is in production and yesterday I installed security updates. I am hesitant to do so as I am afraid of the side effects that this step may have. Could you explain to me what you intend to get as a result from this step?

I understand the concern so I'll explain.

I had you create those backups before we did some extreme steps that I hoped would work but they simply didn't They resulted in over 7,000 errors that need corrected. I think we could likely fix these but it's really not worth the time as I don't think it will fix our issue. So I wanted to go back to when we made the backup and try a different approach.

Found 7341 errors
Fixed 2772 errors

Your other option would be to put the 2008 R2 SP1 DVD in and do a repair install which would likely fix the error. You would then have to install all updates again but it would likely fix it.

Let me know how you would like to proceed.

Thank you for your open words.
I discussed with my team and did the repair installation today with some reboots and over 200 updates. IE9 was fixed instantly, IE10 update just went through.

Thank you for all the effort - I learnt a lot in the process but I believe this was the best to do in the end, I did not want to waste anymore of your time in this complictated server.
I still wonder how it came so far but I am very happy that it works now.
