Hi,

I am usually quite competent to get things fixed but this is baffling me:banghead:: I have one Windows 2008 R2 SP1 server that I try to update from IE9 to IE10 and fail miserably for several months now.
I ran sfc /scannnow that detected some errors but could not fix all.
So I ran SURT but it did not detect additional errors.

So I finally found this helpful forum and downloaded an ran SFCFix wchich detected and fixed two errors.

Still IE10 cannot be installed.

Can you help me?
I attach the SFCfix.txt but the CBS.zip file is 89 MB large. Please tell me if I should condense it somehow. There are 5 CbsPersist cab files that are 70 MB together...

kind regards,
Thomas.

Hi,
thank you for the reply - yes I read through some of the issues here and the IE10 update seems to be difficult sometimes.

Unfortunately uninstalling IE9 through the method mentioned in your webpage fails with a popup box: "an error has occurred not all of the updates were successfully uninstalled"

What now?

regards,
Thomas.

Please zip/attach your C:\Windows\IE9_Main.log

If you see any other IE logs in this directory (C:\Windows\) please zip/attach those as well. For example IE10_Main.log or any other IE9 logs.

Thanks.

Thank you. I got the information I needed from the logs. Now I need the following. Please attempt to install IE10. After if fails, please send me the following.

Copy C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log to your desktop and then zip up and upload to SendSpace. Provide me the link.

Thanks.

Thanks. Please do the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Step#2 - Attempt Install again

Please attempt to install IE10. After if fails, please send me the following.

Copy C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log to your desktop and then zip up and upload to SendSpace. Provide me the link.

Items for your next post
1. SFCFix.txt
2. CBS.log if needed

Hi,

I did just follow your steps to run sfcfix and after that again tried to install IE10 but unfortunately it failed again.

Thank you for taking your time,

Thanks. OK please do the following.

Step#1 - Download IE9 to your desktop
Please download IE9 and save to your desktop. Don't install yet. I know we are trying to install 10 but I'd like to try something since IE9 appears to have issues as well.

Step#2 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

Step#3 - Install IE9
After your server reboots, please install IE9 from the downloaded file. Let me know if it was successful.

Step#4 - Install IE10
Only do this step if Step#3 succeeded. Let me know how it goes.

Thank you,

ok I downloaded everything and completet FRST64. Here is the result:
Fix result of Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (x64) Version:18-07-2015 01
Ran by itsupport at 2015-07-20 00:13:25 Run:1
Running from C:\temp
Loaded Profiles: itsupport (Available Profiles: itsupport & testuser & backup & Administrator & Classic .NET AppPool)
Boot Mode: Normal
==============================================

fixlist content:
*****************
c:\windows\system32\ieframe.dll
*****************

Could not move "c:\windows\system32\ieframe.dll" => Scheduled to move on reboot.

Result of scheduled files to move (Boot Mode: Normal) (Date&Time: 2015-07-20 00:18:15)<=

c:\windows\system32\ieframe.dll => Is moved successfully

==== End of Fixlog 00:18:15 ====

After the reboot, I installed the downloaded IE9. funnily, though, it stopped somehow and opened a new INternet Explorer window in between the process and ended the installation without confirmation or error.
I assumed that this was the normal behaviour and tried to install IE10 again. Did not work, though.

Any more clues or files I should upload?

Kind regards,
Thomas.

I won't give up, until you do ;-)
No, IE9 cannot be uninstelled - still gives me the same error box.

kind regards,
Thomas.

OK, before we go further I need to ensure that we backup your registry hives and I also need to be sure that you have another browser available.

Step#1 - Backup Registry Hives / Retrieve Components hive

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named COMPONENTS.
  • Copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
  • Now right click on the COMPONENTS file that is on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file (COMPONENTS.zip) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBack program now.

Step#2 - Ensure that you have another browser

Please ensure that you have either Firefox or Chrome installed in addition to Internet Explorer. Some of the steps that we do may kill IE temporarily so you may need to use another browser while we are fixing.

Just checking in to let you know I'm still working on your fix. It's been running on my VM for over 19 hours so I need to check that out but will be back with you.

Hey, that's fine - take your time I am patient and happy to get help in any way.

Regards,
Thomas.

OK, let's try this. Please do the following.

1. Click your Start button and type cmd in the search box.
2. Right-click on cmd.exe that shows up in the results and select run as administrator
3. Download the attached Import.zip file and save to your desktop.
4. Right-click on Import.zip and extract the Import.reg file to your desktop
5. Copy and paste the following into the command prompt window and hit enter
reg load HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\COMPONENTS

6. Double-click the Import.reg file and allow it to merge into your registry. If you get an error, you can simply ignore.
7. Download IE10 and save to your desktop. (You will likely need to use a different browser than IE to do this)
8. Attempt to install IE10 from the downloaded file.

If you get an error installing, please zip and send me the following files.
C:\Windows\IE10_Main.log
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Thank you.
