Announcing the Windows 8 Editions

View attachment 271 It is official! Windows 8 will be called Windows 8! Simplicity works for me. In fact, Microsoft has simplified Windows 8 even further. In short, there will be only two versions of Windows 8 for 32- and 64-bit windows, simply Windows 8 and Windows Pro.

Most home computer users will likely be fine with Windows 8. Windows 8 Pro is designed for the "enthusiast" and the business environment. It includes features for encryption, virtualization, PC management and domain connectivity. In addition, Windows Media Center will be available as an economical “media pack” add-on to Windows 8 Pro. .

There will also be Windows RT which is Windows on ARM or WOA. Windows RT will only be available pre-installed on PCs and tablets powered by ARM processors. It will help enable new thin and lightweight form factors with impressive battery life. As explained by Brandon LeBlanc in the Windows Blog,

"Windows RT will include touch-optimized desktop versions of the new Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. For new apps, the focus for Windows RT is development on the new Windows runtime, or WinRT, which we unveiled in September and forms the foundation of a new generation of cloud-enabled, touch-enabled, web-connected apps of all kinds. Although any of the Windows 7 versions can upgrade to either Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro, Windows 7 Ultimate an Windows 7 Pro can only upgrade to Windows 8 Pro.

No indication on pricing yet. I wouldn't think we'll see anything on pricing, other than speculation, until RTM.

Since Windows Media Center will only be available as a “media pack” add-on to Windows 8 Pro, people who use Windows Media Center will want Pro. Otherwise, at this point, the primary differences between Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro are the following:

• BitLocker and BitLocker To Go
• Boot from VHD
• Client Hyper-V
• Domain Join
• Encrypting File System
• Group Policy
• Remote Desktop (host)

For Bitlocker and language packs between Windows 7 Pro and Ultimate, it was a difference of $100. I bought Windows 7 Ultimate myself before I was MVP, but I can imagine this starting out at the $400 range when it comes out in the local stores near me. Price will decrease eventually though, but as with all new products, the hype from the people that "Must have" it, allows MS to get the higher prices from people.

Looks good though, I'll surely be taking a look at this, Developers preview was alright, but the Consumer's Preview really shocked me when they removed that start orb lol
