    Re: Windows7 Update not working

Hello Gary, and welcome to Sysnative :)

Thank you for being so detailed about what you have already tried. It saves a lot of time as I won't have to recommend stuff you have already tried.

Please navigate to the C:\Windows\Logs folder.
Right click and copy the entire CBS folder, and paste to your Desktop.
Right-click on the new copied CBS folder on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
Please upload the new zipped file created in your next reply.

    Thank you :)

    Re: Windows7 Update not working

    Hello Gary :)

Thank you very much for uploading those logfiles. I have a first fix for you. It may not completely cure your Windows Update problems (but maybe it will), but I am hoping that it is enough to get the System Update Readiness Tool working at least.

WARNING: This fix has been designed specifically for Gary. If you are not Gary, do not follow these instructions, as you may cause harm to your computer.

Please download and import the attached registry fix.

    Good luck!

I would like to very strongly advise against this, and would urge you to restore it from any backups you have.

Most registry corruptions in the COMPONENTS subhive will not break the entirety of Windows Update. Much more usually, it is only when you attempt to install a similar update that the problem will become apparent, and Windows Update will break.

Even if you think the two machines are identical in every piece of hardware and software, the chances are the COMPONENTS sub-hive is not.

A simplistic example: Microsoft sometimes re-release updates a short time after release to fix an issue somewhere. If computer A installed update X today, and then an hour later Microsoft re-released version 2, and computer B installed version 2 because it checked for updates a couple of hours later, you would already run into problems. Different editions of Windows, different hardware, different component configuration, etc. all compound the problem.

It may well appear as though you have fixed the issue, but the likelihood is that it will come back to cause issues further down the road, and you will be back here with update problems maybe a month, maybe a year from now. But by then, it will be too far down the road, and there will be nothing I can do to fix your computer, no matter how hard I try.

The fix I posted above was a necessary step in order to proceed. It fixed a corruption of yours. It was not quite enough - there must be a second corruption, but it was progress.

If you have a backup, I would strongly urge you to use it now. It is your computer, and your decision, but I have now expressed my opinion here for your consideration.

I can understand your desire just to get this fixed and over with.

If you manage to restore, upload your entire COMPONENTS hive for me. I will take a look and try to fix everything in a single go, and post it back to you. Hopefully that will make the process as fast as possible for you.

If you are not able to restore, then fair enough. Hopefully you won't run into problems. After all, there is no guarantee of problems, and you might be lucky and avoid any in the near future; look on the bright side :)

    Re: Windows7 Update not working

Here is a helpful hint that I have been using when we get a lot of Windows 7 updates.

    1. Do the small (Optional) ones first
    2. The important ones I look at the size of each of them and download the smaller ones first leaving the larger ones to do one at a time.
I re-boot 2-3 times along the way giving my computer a chance to swallow or digest what I've downloaded.

    3. Sometimes there are downloads that have nothing to do with my computer so for these I right click on them and hide them.

I am sure others have different suggetions but I have never had any problems or errors doing it this way. Just sharing with you what has worked for me.

    Re: Windows7 Update not working

The problem is not that I can't install some updates, the problem is it won't even go as far as showing me any updates at all just gives me "WindowsUpdate_80073712" "WindowsUpdate_dt000", and I just notes that my update history is empty none of my old updates that was successful no longer listed in update history

    Gary,
Have you done a Restore back to when it was working correctly?
If it does restore then check history and download all the missing files.

    Gary,
Looks like you have a real serious problem that one of the BSOD guys can walk you through and clean up your pc.
This is way above my pay scale and do not want to make matters worse.
Try sending a PM to one of the BSOD/Developer's staff for additional help.

I know what I would do as I have the original System Recovery disks that takes me way back to Factory Settings but PLEASE contact someone here with a PM!!

    Re: Windows7 Update not working

I know I got serious problem and hopefully be able to resolve it, I really don't want to get system back to original state be cause all programs I got installed on system will need to be re installed and that will be tedious task.

    Hi Gary,

Do you have a Microsoft account? If so, you can upload it to your Skydrive:

    http://www.skydrive.com

Or any other file hosting website of your choice :)
