I have had this HP laptop for a little under 3 years. About 2 years in I have had a problem with windows saying it is not genuine. After this happened, my windows update and windows defender started saying that the service was not running, please restart. Restarting did not start the service. I have identified that my Norton Internet Security may have affected my windows defender, but I can find no links between Norton and Windows update. I have done many simple fixes with no fruitful results. I have run a SFC scan that returned with corrupt registry keys but no fixes, an antimalware/antispyware scan that came up clean, tried manually starting the service which returned an error 126: module not found, and running the fixit tool. Another thing to note would be that when I open up my registry editor to do some fixes, I can't find my components key in hklm. I run Windows 7 64 bit Service Pack 1 and have Norton Internet security, Malwarebytes Antimalware, and CCleaner. I have not been able to update the laptop in 2 years. Any suggestions? Also I am new to this forum, so bear with me please.

Hello, and welcome to Sysnative :)

Firstly, let's take a look at that non-genuine message, and see if there is anything we can do to help. It might just be a mistake caused by a corrupt file, or something. Can you please follow these instructions: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/windows-7-%7C-windows-vista/1326-activation-validation-problems-beginners-guide-how-ask-help.html

and post the logs and requested information in this thread.

Then,

Export CBS folder

  1. Click the Start button
    StartButton_16x16.gif
    then click Computer.
  2. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
  3. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
  4. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  5. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
  6. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  7. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.

Finally, please upload the newly created CBS.zip file to your next post also. From this information, we can advise you further.

Thank you,

Richard

Don't worry about it. Things break, and that is why we are here: to help fix them.

However, every time I take a look with surface treatment logs, I find some other file to be corrupt. Therefore, I believe it is best that I start right at the bottom, and get a report on every corruption, so I know where I stand and how best to approach a fix. So, please:

• Download the System Update Readiness Tool from Microsoft ->here<-. Save the tool to a convenient location as it may be necessary to run it again.
• After the download has completed, double-click the file and wait while it initializes.
• Click Yes to begin installation.

Once it has finished (please be patient, it may take 45mins to an hour to complete), open an Elevated Command Prompt: How to start an Elevated Command Prompt in Windows 7 and Vista

and carefully type in:

sfc /scannow

noting the space. Press enter, and allow it to complete.

Then, following the same instuctions as I gave you earlier, please export and upload another CBS folder.

Thank you,

Richard

P.S. I don't know how to read the MGADiag report. I have requested someone else to assist there. Please follow their instructions also. I deal with the CBS logs, they deal with the MGADiag logs. I hope this is OK with you, as these logs take a specialist to read, and I am not one!

Hello and thanks for the very quick replies. I installed the new drivers Noel, so here is my report:

Niemiro I couldn't run the System Update Readiness tool; it returned Installer encountered an error 0x80080005 Server execution failed.

Hello again :)

We are still analysing your logfiles to determine the best course of action. The initial analysis always takes longest as there is much to work out, and long logfiles to read. I thank you for your continued patience, and hope to have instructions ready for you by tomorrow.

Richard

Hello again :)

I still believe that those file mis-matches may be in error. There is certainly the potential for it. Since the System Update Readiness Tool is not working, I shall have to return to slightly more primitive tools at least until I can get it working again.

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt: How to start an Elevated Command Prompt in Windows 7 and Vista
type sfc /scannow (notice the space), and press enter.

Then please upload me another copy of the CBS folder:

Thank you!

Richard

Thought I'd responded to this - obviously not :)
There's no change in the log, so it's not the drivers that are the problem.
The usual remedy at this point would be to rename the Catroot2 folder and rebuild the store - but Richard is an expert on the errors in your CBS log, and I'd like to see what he can come up with by way of a directed solution, rather than the sledgehammer one :)

(apologies for the formatting - but IE10 doesn't seem to like the forum!)
(Ah - Compatibility mode works :) )

One thing you could do, which may aid analysis, is run a further MGADiag report, after attempting validation at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate using Internet Explorer.

It should reveal a little more detail - a code and a number of 'tampered files' in the WAT data.

Thanks again guys, I really appreciate your work on this. I tried running the Genuine Validation Tool off of 3 different web browsers, but kept getting an error 0x80080005. I get that a lot on this computer. Also, is my components key important in this problem? I can't find mine.

Thanks a lot for your continued help, Noel. I am tempted to check out the 0x80080005 error code (there is often a very specific fix), and if that doesn't do it, then I will delete catroot2.

Your components key being missing fortunately has a benign explanation. You are running Windows 7 (as opposed to Windows Vista which is different), and in Windows 7, regedit doesn't display the COMPONENTS key by default. You must manually load it. Therefore, there is nothing to be concerned about here, and I will help you to load it if I feel it necessary to check.

I do, however, suspect that you do indeed have a registry corruption, just not in the components sub-hive, but in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Version

Firstly, I would like you to navigate to C:\Windows\servicing\Version, and tell me the name of the folder or folders contained within. It/They should be a version number, such as 6.1.7601.17592.

I then want you to open an Elevated Command Prompt: How to start an Elevated Command Prompt in Windows 7 and Vista

and paste in:

reg export "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing" %userprofile%\Desktop\RegistryExport1.reg

Then please zip up and upload RegistryExport1.reg, which will be on your Desktop.

Thank you!

Richard

Hello again :)

Can you please attempt to install this update: Download Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2533552) from Official Microsoft Download Center

and let me know the return code, be it a success message, "This update does not apply to your system" (most likely), or an error code.

Then please go back to the Elevated Command Prompt and run this command:

reg export "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing" %userprofile%\Desktop\RegistryExport2.reg

Then please zip up (by right clicking on it > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder) and upload RegistryExport2.reg, which will be on your Desktop.

Finally, please go back to the Command Prompt, and paste in, one at a time, pressing enter after each line:

dir %windir%\Servicing\Packages /s > %UserProfile%\Desktop\log1.txt
dir %windir%\WinSxS /s > %UserProfile%\Desktop\log2.txt

Then zip up and upload log1.txt and log2.txt also.

Thank you!

Richard

Hello again :)

I am sorry about the delay. You have a rather rare issue I am still attempting to nail down precisely. When I have to research an issue from scratch, it can take a little while to make headway. I hope to have further instructions to you tomorrow.

Thank you, and I am extremely sorry for this. Please do note that your issue is not forgotten, just that it is taking me quite a few hours to research around my normal day to day life.

Richard

Thank you for all the help! I didn't expect a fix this soon in the process. No problems, we all have our lives to live. Thank you very much for showing me a little bit of what I have to do.

You have a very peculiar issue, and I am still trying to work out exactly what is causing it. It is very strange. Please:

System Look
Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    Code:
    :filefind
    sppc.dll
    watadminsvc.exe
    user32.dll
    spsys.sys
  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.

Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Thank you,

Richard
