I have a windows 7 PC 32bit Home Pre with no SP1 that updates will not install on. I have done all the fixit's, run sfc with no problems found. Run all my malware tools and really anything else I could find that would be helpful. I have done the software distribution folder stuff. The PC runs great except for updates. It gives me the 80070002 error. Attachments CBS.zip 2 MB · Views: 5

I have reviewed your CBS log and spotted the problem almost instantly as it's something we face quite a lot here. Unfortunately there is no fix it that could possibly fix this level of corruption, but I can fix it manually for you by editing the raw binary of the file. You have what's known as an embedded null in your registry. Here is what I saw in your CBS log: COMPONENTS\DerivedData\VersionedIndex\6.1.7600.16385 (win7_rtm.090713-1255)\ComponentFamilies\\u00f8\6\u00c4mfkiosoft-windows-comctl32-v5.resources_ This name should be a lot longer than that so corruption has led to it being cut short. Fortunately, the data isn't gone, it simply can't be accessed. Upload a file to Dropbox Note: If you prefer, the same techniques can be applied to your Skydrive however these instructions may not necessarily work for Skydrive. If you haven't already created a Dropbox account, please do so Here Although this procedure can be done directly through the website, it is much easier to do so via the Windows client which can be downloaded from the Dropbox website: https://www.dropbox.com/install After you have downloaded and installed that, you should now see Dropbox in your Favourites box in Windows Explorer. This is the folder that will be synchronised with the Dropbox servers, anything that you wish to back up online can be put in here, but today we will be using it to transfer files. To access your Dropbox folder, just click on the link in the top left hand corner of Windows Explorer (accessible from any location - Documents etc.). Alternatively, you can double click on the icon found in your system tray (next to the time). If you are still having issues locating this folder, unless otherwise specified, it can be found under this location: C:\Users\{Your username}\Dropbox Copy all of the following files to the Public folder in your Dropbox: C:\Windows\system32\config\components Select all files by pressing Ctrl+A then right-click and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder This will create a .zip file in your Public folder. Right-click on this file and select Dropbox > Copy Public Link then Paste (Ctrl + V) this link into your next post for me please Tom

Perhaps you could ask your friend to register here and I could talk them through it directly? Tom

It is extremely important that all Windows Updates can be installed to prevent infection and all of the nastiness which comes with it. We will be able to provide your friend with good step by step instructions, and we have had good success talking people of all abilities through many different procedures before. The steps that are required here should not be too complicated, and we just need someone who is able to carefully follow instructions - absolutely no technical skill is required. Richard
