Hey guys,

This isn't a major issue, but I have been setting up a Vista VM and am having all sorts of issues.

I have reinstalled and recreated the VM 3 times now, first 2 installs would BSOD + had many Windows Update issues, this 3rd install with a fresh ISO download seems stable except one update won't install.

The update is KB2631813 and fails with an Error 800B0100. Vista x86 VM in VMWare Player. 2GB RAM and 4 CPU's dedicated to VM if interested. Host system specs in postbit.

SFC... Run 1 reported it had found files and repaired them. Runs 2 and 3 the same.

SURT ran and reported no errors except something strange I (in my limited time) have never seen.

Windows Update still fails, even after SFC and SURT.

CBS folder zipped up and attached.

Thanks,

Stephen

Hi Stephen,

Regarding the error in your CheckSUR log, this is perfectly normal. It is an error you will see when running the SURT in a VM as it struggles to get the information about the virtual environment in which it is being run.

Code:

Your CBS log is showing signs of the infamous Wdf01000(Uninstall).mof bug that earthed a few months ago. You might remember the hard work Richard put into finding the cause of this: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/wi...d-help-system-file-checker-corrupt-files.html

Let's take a look at the directory structure and see where these errors are coming from :)

System Look

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    Code:
    :dir
    C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution /s
    C:\Windows\winsxs /s
  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Tom

Thanks Tom,

Will look at this tomorrow, just packed up for the night.

It's strange 3 installs have all had issues. I even re downloaded the iso for the 3rd install (this one) thinking I had a corrupt iso. My other VMs are fine.

Hey Tom,

Command Prompt didn't run correctly, it popped up with this window.

Should I run another SFC scan even though this failed to uninstall?

SystemLook, you liked to the x64 version but I managed to find the x86 version since this is an x86 VM. Log zipped and attached (it was 17.5MB so had to zip it).

Hi Stephen,

I'm not entirely sure what you've done with the attachment but you've used an admin only way of linking attachments so I can't see it. Would you mind trying again please? I don't want to do anything more down that route until I know what that error was so we'll hold off on the SFC for now. The 800B0100 can still be dealt with though:

Command Prompt

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\b2416b602dbda7dfe8647015653e271e b2416b602dbda7dfe8647015653e271e.bak

Reboot and try updating again please!

Tom

P.S. Sorry if my instructions ever seem too detailed, they're designed for OPs with a lot less computer experience! It's too much hassle to dumb them all down so you're getting the originals :p

@Tom, the error was just the standard usage for wsua.exe dialog. It is because this is a Vista computer, and Vista's wusa.exe doesn't supporting uninstalling of updates (that came in Windows 7). I have made that same mistake myself more times than I care to remember, it is a right pain :p

No worries Tom and thanks for the help,

Sorry about the attachment, don't know how I've done that. I did copy it across from another location so maybe that mucked things up. Anyway, I think Richard is right but here you go anyway:
Screenshot - 25_03_2013 , 05_34_33 PM.png

Booting the VM now to perform the fix..... Boot faster!! :p

Ok... ran the command you asked for and it told me the syntax was incorrect. Sorry!

Thanks so much for saving me the headache, Richard! I could've easily spent many pages wondering why the update switch was missing, lol.

My syntax isn't wrong, the syntax ren accepts is wrong... IMO :p I've fixed the command so can you try again please?

Tom

Update installed without error! Thanks Tom. :)

Anything else you need to do?

That's a fix that Noel recently introduced me to so he's the one to thank :) For a start, you're safe to delete the backup folder we made:

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\b2416b602dbda7dfe8647015653e271e.bak

Now for your SFC problem. Let's try another SFC scan and see where we are now:

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Nice to see that fix works for others - I only got the chance to test it over the weekend, when I got a machine in my hot sweaty hands with the problem, so got a chance to do some serious tracework.

The recent snow stopped me going to the pub anyhow :(

Is it the same KB number that's causing this? I can't get over how coincidental it was that the day after you tell me about a fix, I run into my first case of it :)

Where's the commitment? :p Well just think of the money it saved you!

Tom

:)
Nope- I don't recall offhand which update it was, but it was on a machine that had been off for 5 months after the battery nearly blew up - and 2 more months after it got a ZeroAccess infection.
Last successful updates prior to the weekend were back in August, IIRC - and I'd only fixed it in March!

Sorry for the delay.

Enjoy the cbs.txt file attached below. :)

I've seen this error a few times and it seems to recur every time an SFC is run - but it doesn't seem to affect the machine.
Uninstalling and reinstalling the latest User Mode Driver Framework patch does sometimes work.
User-Mode Driver Framework version 1.11 update for Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2

Because this is a new install I doubt KB2685813 will be installed. KB2761494 is a cumulative that contains KB2685813 and is probably the one that we will have to remove here - I tried uninstalling it a few posts back with wusa, stupidly, but then decided to go for the 800B0100 first :)

As the errors are still here, can you uninstall KB2761494 please Stephen?

Remove an update

If it isn't there, try looking for KB2685813.

Tom

Uninstalled KB2761494.

I have run SFC again and attached the log below.

How's your computer behaving now, Stephen? The Wdf01000(Uninstall).mof SFC issue has gone now so everything should be as good as new!

Tom

I haven't really had a chance to fire up the VM since the fix, but it does seem OK now. I will activate it in a few days if it seems stable enough. Good to know the errors are gone, and thank you for your help.

Stephen
