Windows Update errors and Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files

My Windows Update keeps on coming up with Errors so In Windows 8 I tried Ctrl+X>Command Prompt (Admin)>dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

I get a message like:

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios.

CBS Log appears to be greater than 52mb and keeps on saying "access is denied" when I try to open it

Why do I think this is happening? My Windows 8 Pro with WMC 32-bit was running smoothly until my hard drive was affected by a lightning storm.
Had to pay a data Company to recover the data as the PCB board was gone.
When my recovered files were moved to a new drive, it didn't boot so had to use the following commands on a Windows 8 64-bit platform to be able to boot up again (since I lost my Windows 8 Pro 32-bit disc):

bootrec /RebuildBcd
bootrec /fixMbr
bootrec /fixboot

Only problem is my Windows 8 Apps don't open saying they need to be repaired.

Any advice would be appreciated :thumbsup2:

Thanks

Ok I followed another thread's instructions to export and zip the logs. Here they are attached. Hope it helps?

Let me know if you would like me to delete all log files and start sfc scanow and Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth from the beginning

Hello and welcome to Sysnative!

If you have just received an email notification from me to run the System Update Readiness Tool, please ignore it. It won't cause any harm, but it isn't what I meant for you to do (I posted to the wrong thread).

Unfortunately, the direct transfer of files, by the looks of things across to different hardware, hasn't gone entirely smoothly.

Your best bet, if at all possible, would be to try a "PC Refresh without affecting your files". See here for more details: How to refresh, reset or restore your PC - Microsoft Windows Help

That is likely to be the quickest and best method for you to get this machine running again.

If for some reason it fails, come back here and I'll see if I can fix the issue, but be aware that we could end up chasing this issue and still not find a fix (issues as a result of direct file transfer are notoriously difficult to fix), but I will try my best if necessary.

Also, you say you don't have your 32bit Windows 8 DVD. Do you have any disks at all? And also, do you have Windows 8.1 installed?

Thank you.

Richard

Thank you Richard for your advice :)

I have Windows 8 64-bit disc. I am guessing refreshing with 64-bit is risky given my Apps were installed on 32-bit pro. Im thinking I should try very hard to find the 32-bit disc or perhaps buy a cheap version on Ebay!

I do not have Windows 8.1 Installed as every time I attempt an update in the Windows Store it says something along the lines of "Windows update couldnt be completed. Something happened and the update could not be completed. Click try again or cancel"

I would strongly advise against the cheap copy on Ebay. Not on the principal (after all, you own a genuine licence which you've already paid for - you've just lost the media), but the vast majority of disks on Ebay are counterfeit. This has two major implications (ignoring that fact that it's illegal in most countries to knowingly buy or use counterfeit material). First, when Microsoft Activation servers realise, the PC will be partially crippled. Secondly, take a moment to think about how the crackers and hackers make money out of putting stuff on the internet for free (Ebay disks are just downloaded copies of the stuff on the internet). They tend to very often embed within their products stealthy malware. Not the year 2000 era pop-up advertisement in your face viruses, but the silent type which quietly siphon off your banking details.

You don't want the stuff off Ebay. Instead, what I recommend is contacting Microsoft: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=331355

or the company which sold you your PC. Provided you can show that you once had a legitimate copy of Windows, both will almost always send you replacement DVDs for only a small shipping & handling fee. Then you get the real deal.

Thanks. So I found the disc and tried a refresh by booting up and it was at 5% for a while so I was confident it was working but then it said something like that there was a problem and no changes were made. I have tried to Google and it seems to be a common issue which may or may not be related to Windows Media Centre making my windows a "media centre ediiton".
Should I try upgrading whilst logged into Windows using the same disc? It comes up with 2 options: "keep nothing" or "keep personal files only"
My concern is just 3rd party apps like Shazam or Skype. I don't want to lose the underlying data for those apps. Should I try it and if the upgrade deletes the apps maybe I could do a System Restore?
What is interesting is the slideshows on the windows app tiles are updating. Eg News App tile is updating with current stories and the weather app tile is updating with the correct weather details but when I click on any of them it doesnt let me enter the app

Any help from here would be much appreciated! All I want is my Shazam tags and Shazam support is unable to assist me unless I can successfully enter the app from this session of Windows :)
