Hi,

I'm trying to update my Windows 7 64 Bit Home Premium OS to SP1, so that I can run an upgrade install to hopefully rectify some corrupted files. The problem started months back when I was not being able to update iTunes or Adobe, and at the time I thought I had traced it down to an msi installer issue. I didn't have time to sort the problem out as I have had professional exams every month since Sept '13. Finally they have finished for a little while! I'm still unable to install selected files that require msi. I have downloaded SP1 and attempted to install manually and it won't work.

I have performed an SFC scan, and there are known errors - however I can't open the CBS log as I get an error

"CBS
You don't have permission to open this file
Contact the file owner or an Administrator to obtain permissions"

I'm logged in as the admin, and still receive this issue.

If anyone can offer any help it would be greatly appreciated. I have read so many Microsoft support threads I'm beginning to question my sanity.

I'm no expert, i'll do what I can to help. If I can't fix the problem I'll make sure to get somebody who will.

Try to fix the problem by running Windows Update troubleshooter.

Click the start button > Control Panel > under "System and Security" there should be a link titled "Find and fix problems" click it.

Under "System and Security" again there should be a link that says "Fix problems with Windows Update" click it.

Click next, and if prompted to run as Administrator allow it.

Josh, thank you!

Just about to leave for work, will try the things mentioned when I get back in this evening.

Hi,

Can you do the following for me please:

Run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT)

  1. Download the System Update Readiness Tool from Microsoft --> here <-- Please save the tool to a convenient location as it may be necessary to run it again.
  2. After the download has completed, double-click the file and wait while it initializes.
  3. Click Yes to begin installation. Please note it may take some time to complete and may appear to stall whilst installing. Don't worry, this is perfectly normal behaviour. Also note, whilst I say "installing", it's actually running the tool and can therefore be "installed" (run) repeatedly.

Export CBS folder

  1. Click the Start button :startorb: then click Computer.
  2. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
  3. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
  4. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  5. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
  6. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  7. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.
  8. Attach this new file to your next post, or upload it to a free file sharing site such as Dropbox if it is too large to attach here

Regards,
Stephen

I have 500MB of diskspace on C:/, and I get the following error when trying to run SURT. screengrab.png I receieved a different error when I tried to install this file on Saturday, so I re-downloaded a clean .exe from the Microsoft site when trying this time. My laptop has a 50GB C:/, and a 250GB D:/ - so the C drive is almost always full.

CBS file -View attachment 6722

Thank you for your help so far.

Ok, I made 2.5GB of space available and ran the SURT install again.. I then got the following pop ups:

1) SURT1.png

I then clicked "Yes", and got the following message 30 seconds later..

2) SURT2.png

If I click close, the installation shuts down.. and I'm back to square one. I have tried rebooting, and I have exactly the same problem.

Have you got any ideas to get around this?

Delete the following directory: C:\Windows\CheckSUR

If necessary, we will perform a full manual uninstall, including removing all registry traces, but it's usually not necessary. The chances are it's just a corrupt half extracted cabinet file SURT can't cope with.

Richard

Hi Richard,

Ok, I have deleted C:\Windows\CheckSUR

Re-ran the installer, same error messages. I have downloaded the SURT installer twice, and tried both incase one became corrupt during the download.

What can I try next?

When someone has a moment, please could they review this thread? I'm still stuck with exactly the same problem.

Hi,

The problem is, we need the SURT logs. This error is very difficult to fix without them. However, SURT won't install on your computer for some reason....

I will give Richard a nudge and see what he has to say - he's more experienced than me.

Stephen

Hello again :)

I'm so sorry about the delay. Can you please upload a new set of CBS logs (whole folder please). I need the latest set from after you freed up some space and SURT continued to error.

Thank you.

Richard

Hi flipflip,

Here's the problem:

Code:
2014-02-02 17:54:42, Info CBS Failed to parse the manifest from the buffer. [HRESULT = 0x800f0900 - CBS_E_XML_PARSER_FAILURE]

2014-02-02 17:54:42, Info CBS Mark store corruption flag because of package: Package_for_KB2647516~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~9.4.1.0. [HRESULT = 0x800f0900 - CBS_E_XML_PARSER_FAILURE]
2014-02-02 17:54:42, Info CBS Failed to initialize package: Package_for_KB2647516~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~9.4.1.0, from path: \\?\C:\Windows\Servicing\Packages\Package_for_KB2647516~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~9.4.1.0.mum, existing package: 1 [HRESULT = 0x800f0900 - CBS_E_XML_PARSER_FAILURE]

And here's the fix:

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

I doubt this will get the SURT up and running again, but it will put us one step closer to the end though.
