Every time I click on "Check for Updates" I keep getting an error code "80070002". It's pretty frustrating as I don't know how to fix it. Help would be very appreciated. Yet everytime I "check for updates" it says Error 80070002 windows update has encountered an unknown error. Also it says "Most recent check for updates: Never" and "Updates were installed: Never". I installed HotFix for Windows and tried "FixIt" but still didn't work.

The missing update history is a result of deleting or renaming your SoftwareDistribution folder, did you do this by any chance? SFC Scan Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each sfc /scannow Wait for this to finish before you continue copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post. Tom

When I typed "sfc /scannow" in the command prompt and pressed Enter, it said "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service". I've also done a full system scan. I used the "Fix It" repair tool for Windows. I followed the instructions to solve this problem which are on the Windows Website. I even ran chkdsk and it still didn't solve anything. Please Help.

There are a few permissions restrictions on the CBS log so that might be why you can't see its contents. Can you copy it to your Desktop and try opening it again from there please? With a bit of luck, the contents should appear now. Tom

I was unable to use the sfc \scannow function as well but your second command returned a cbs.txt file that was actually too big to attach. I cut it down to just the logs from today which should include several restarts and windows update attempts so it should be fine. Thanks in advance! Attachments cbs.txt 210.8 KB · Views: 1
