Windows Resource Protection unable to fix files

I just did a scan of my computer, both chkdsk /f and sfc /SCANNOW.
I ran SCANNOW first but after the corrupt file message appeared, I ran chkdsk to try and fix the errors. Running chkdsk again in read only mode showed no problems, but running sfc /SCANNOW still shows the errors are not fixed.
Here's the error I got :
Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 52% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenario

Hello, and welcome to Sysnative :)

Can you please download and install the System Update Readiness Tool: What is the System Update Readiness Tool?

Save the download somewhere convenient as we may need it again later.

Then when complete (sometimes up to an hour), please post C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

Thank you!

Richard

Thanks

I forgot to mention i use a windows 8 computer. The link you provide doesn't have a download for windows 8, so i susspect i need another program?

Hello again :)

I'm so sorry about that - it was in the Windows 8 section as well and I didn't notice. Please accept my apologies, you are quite correct, and things changed a little for Windows 8.

First, please start an Elevated Command Prompt: How to run an elevated command prompt

Copy and paste in

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

and let it complete.

Once done

  1. Select Windows Explorer and then click Computer.
  2. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
  3. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
  4. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  5. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
  6. Into this folder paste the following additional logfile: C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\DISM.log
  7. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  8. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created. Please upload it here.

Thank you!

Richard

P.S. Windows 8 now includes SURT as an integral component (dism) and so it does not require an additional download. Yay! It also fixes more errors. Yay! Unfortunately, it doesn't log as well, so when it can't fix the error, it's harder for me to then fix it manually, as sometimes it doesn't tell me what it actually found as corrupt, so I can't fix it. Oh....

Windows 8 is both a blessing and a curse in this regard. I am, however, creating various tools to complement dism and provide that extra logging, but they are unfortunately not ready yet. Hopefully the logging will be good today :)

Well that was a verry detailed guide :p
I'm a programmer myself so it was easy to follow :p ,but the windows problems keep being annoying to fix :p

i'm not a real win8 lover myself, its not realy helpfull to me and don't get the improvements made, it only made stuff harder to fix :p

the log file was apperently to big for the forum so i placed it in my drobox:
url : https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3523194/CBS.zip
I hope you can help me. If you need more specs of the computer or so just ask em :D

P.S. I started using the sfc scannow becous i wanted to install vmware and it kept giving me the msi error, (aswel as some other prorams like skype when it wants to update).

Hello again Runesmacher :)

I am very sorry about it being overly detailed. The reason is that I have a bunch of pre-written instructions which are designed specifically to be followed by anyone, and I simply copy and paste them into any thread. It saves me a lot of time as I can paste the same set of instructions into any thread extremely quickly rather than having to think about each person I'm helping, take a guess at how much experience they have with computers, and then try to manually tweak it each time. I hope you can understand why I do this, and that this is in no way a suggestion that you need every step spelled out in that way.

Right...dism's done a great job :) Please try SFC again. It should this time complete. If it reports corruptions, and only if it reports corruptions, please then upload a fresh copy of C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Otherwise, we are done on the SFC front.

Next...Windows Installer error. Please enable verbose Windows Installer logging: How to enable Windows Installer logging

Try to install a couple of the failing programs, and then upload all files matching the following pattern: %temp%\Msi*.log

Thank you!

Richard

you don't need to be sorry for good work :D

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired
them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For
example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not
supported in offline servicing scenarios.

Next... the link is for windows xp :p i tryed the regedit, but didn't get the files you say.
i did get the folowing file: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3523194/vmware.zip

maybe you can do somthing with those

OK, can you please upload the CBS log at some point and I'll check that the corruption is nothing too important.

That verbose logging link definitely works on Vista and 7, I wasn't so sure about 8, however, I see no reason why it shouldn't have worked, especially as the article says "The registry entry in this article is valid for all Windows operating systems.". Now, I know it's an old article, but I'll have to give it a try on 8 to be sure. The thing is, it does work on 7 and I will be very surprised if they moved it elsewhere in 8. I'll have to check and get back to you :)

And I'll take a look over those logs too and get back to you.
