I have a client who has Windows Live Mail, it's pop3 connected to Frontier (which is now outsourced to Yahoo Mail). It consistently hangs on "Send & Receive" and sometimes it will work fine. I brought the laptop to my shop and it hangs there too, wireless connected and tried by network cable. It only happens when the pop3 is set to SSL port 995. I have removed the account and reinstalled it. I have uninstalled WLM and reinstalled, did a WLM repair. I have tried WLM 2012 and went back to 2011. For this and other reasons I did a Windows Repair. I have turned off the firewall. I have read so many message boards filled with these kinds of bugs with this program. I installed WLM on my machine and have no problems. We finally switched to IMAP and for now it seems to be working but not everyone wants IMAP syncing with their iphones, ipads and other devices due to data limits. Does anyone have any ideas as I might have another client with these kinds of issues on pop3. Thank you!

It may seem like a cop-out suggestion, but I think it is generally safe to say the consensus is to dump WLM and move to Outlook.com or a web based email program like Gmail, or the web mail provided by most IPSs, or anything else but WLM!

I still prefer Outlook (the paid client, often part of MS Office) that I use with MailWasher Pro to manage all my email accounts. And I am glad to say Outlook 2007 still works great with W10. I have 8 email accounts with Gmail and Cox (my ISP) so using a web based account does not really work for me. Also some may not want to spend money on an email client or spamblocker. That said, most email services support automatic forwarding to a single account.

You might want to check out this from Woody Leonhard: Windows Live Mail woes continue. I know most people don't like learning something new, but with the problems WLM keeps having, it may be time.

Thanks, Digerati, I agree with everything you say, but for elderly clients (in this case), that take years to learn the software, they are hesitant to change. They want to use a client over web mail, to categorize contacts and storage folders, I think webmail is very confusing for elderly people. Gmail has changed its format and confused some of my clients and yahoo mail is very slow and buggy, Yahoo Mail doesn't even show the size of the emails. MS has the knack for making software that is pleasing to the eyes, simple and large print, then people stay with it. Personally, I use Outlook 2010 and I love it! Windows Live Mail has been a buggy program from the start!

I understand completely. I'm no spring chicken myself and have several elderly clients older than me. But advances in technologies always bring change - especially if security is involved.

Otherwise, sorry, but I really have nothing else to offer. Outlook.com is what MS would probably suggest.

Thanks Digerati, I appreciate it. I finally set up Imap instead of pop3 and it seems to be working much better. Will eventually move them on to Outlook or even Thunderbird, I use Thunderbird with 5 or 6 yahoo addresses and never seem to have any issues with it and transferring a profile is so easy!

And note in that article that "Mozilla stopped directly supporting Thunderbird in 2012". Here it is 4 years later and they still have not found a proper home for it. So note sure I would select Tbird if getting past learning curves is an issue.

Thanks for the update Corrine, noted, though, almost all my clients use gmail or yahoo.
