windows is constantly telling me that my laptop is ready to install updates. it asks me to reboot. so i do but nothing gets installed. even now as i am typing this it is telling me that its going to reboot itself in 15 min. ive read different things online and nothing ive tried seems to work. i was even getting error codes before but not anymore. per one of the posts i read somewhere it said to delet the "software distribution" folder. i did and now i dont see the error codes come up. but the updates still dont install. this sure is getting annoying.

can anyone help?

here is the copy and past of the log from the test you had me run.

Hi Elias :)

My name is Aura and I'll be assisting you with your issue. Follow the instructions below please.

System File Checker (SFC)
Follow the instructions below to run a SFC scan on your system and to provide the CBS log in your next reply;
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select
    Spcusrh.png
    Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";
  • Once the scan is complete, enter the command below and press on Enter
    Code:
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  • A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't contains the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

Can you post the download URL for the file? Go on Dropbox.com, right-click on the file and select Share. You'll be given a URL. Copy and paste it here.

Alright I might have found something in the CBS.log. Let's make sure that DISM doesn't return anything first.

DISM - Fixing Component Store Corruption
Follow the instructions below to run a DISM scan on your system:
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and press on Enter;
  • Let the scan run until the end (100%);
  • Copy the C:\Windows\Logs\DISM folder and C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log file on your Desktop, then right-click on it, go to Send to... and select Compressed .zip archive;
  • Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the DISM scan is completed, it won't contains the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

Sorry, I usually reply within 24 hours so I'm still in my timeframe. I work during the day and I cannot reply to every single threads during my shift. Follow the instructions below please.

SoftwareDistribution - Rename
Follow the instructions below to rename the folders in SoftwareDistribution.
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select
    Spcusrh.png
    Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the commands below one at the time (press Enter to send it);
    • net stop wuauserv
    • ren %SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistribution\Download DL.bak
    • net start wuauserv
    • wuauclt.exe /updatenow
This will trigger a check for updates. Let me know if any are found and if so, what's their KB number.

again, it was not my intention to sound rude in my previous post. i do apologize if it came across that way...
is this what its supposed to say.

C:\Windows\system32>net stop wuauserv
The Windows Update service is not started.

More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3521.

C:\Windows\system32>ren %systemroot%\softwaredistributioin\download dl.bak
The system cannot find the file specified.

C:\Windows\system32>

You didn't enter the second command properly. You mistyped the SoftwareDistribution folder name. Also, you can ignore the net stop wuauserv command since the service isn't started. Just use the last 3 commands, in order.

ok, i did that. now do i wait for it to pop up and say something? or should i reboot?

Go in your Windows Update panel, do you see it looking for updates? Does it says that no updates were found?

my deepest apologies.... i left my laptop on all night and all of today. when i went to the place you said, and i looked in the history it says that there are a lot of files pending restart (which i have done twice today) and a few others that said install failed. i think that was windows 10 update

im guessing it must have updated while i wasnt watching. it also stated that some of the updates did install

Alright well can you restart your laptop again and see what happens? If it install updates, let me know if they succeed or fail.

done but it still has all those files that say faild or pending restart. shoud i copy and paste from the "reporting events" note pad found in "software distribution" folder?

Upload the following files for me instead.

C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
