Could anyone please help with this machine. 64bit Win 7.
I am down to one last update failing. It installs and then instructs that it needs a reboot. It then fails during the pre-startup update page and reverts changes.

CheckSUR is all clear...

I have copied a known good manifest file from a working machine into: C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSUR\winsxs\Manifests
and then re-ran the update readiness checker again. but it doesn't see the corrupt file.

Here is the CBS log: View attachment CBS.log

Can anyone please help?

SFC /ScanNow
Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

Manual download of update and install gives the same....
Updates were successfully installed
"Windows Cant update importnant files and services while the system is using them. Save any open files, and then restart the computer."
Then on reboot it gets to 67% then reverts the changes.

Ive taken ownership of the above listed manifest file given myself permission to write and replaced the contents from a working copy (then set owner back to TrustedInstaller and removed my permissions). This has cleared SFCFix error and this now also reports all clear.
Ive Reset Windows Update components
Recreated SoftwareDistribution folders
Ive also tried installing with minimal startup.
Still reverts and fails...

It's actually unclear whether or not the manifest file you replaced was damaged or not. It probably was (SFCFix was hinted at such from CBS.log but did not verify it itself) **but** the real reason the error cleared was because the CBS.log persisted in the meantime. Replacing the file might have fixed the root cause but it wasn't what cleared the SFCFix log.

Regardless, please follow the Posting Instructions (https://www.sysnative.com/forums/windows-update/4736-windows-update-forum-posting-instructions.html) carefully and precisely and someone will be along shortly. In particular we need the whole CBS folder, not just CBS.log.

P.S. The fact that SURT failed to detect the manifest indicates that it is highly likely the manifest was not damaged in the first place. One of the reasons this SFCFix message is a Warning and not an Error is that it is fairly imprecise. It's merely a hint to the analyst to check the CBS.log to see what's really going on.

Apologies.. See CBS.zip attached: View attachment 19393

As you will see from the persist log, quite a few manifest and mum/cat files were fixed/restored/replaced by running SUR.
Thanks for the tip, i did have a hunch that it was fine as i did a compare on both files content and it was identical, but assumed it must have done something by replacing it as the SFCfix warning went away.

Many thanks in advance.

Thank you for that!

The good news is that your thread could be euphemistically called "interesting". The bad news is that in all the years I've been working Windows Update threads I've never seen one quite like yours. This style of rollback error is rare in and of itself [and getting rarer - we get very few rollback failures on Windows 8+ and Windows Vista and Windows 7 machines are a dying breed] but the precise error code root cause is not one I've seen occur over a rollback before.

Here's the relevant snippet:

The innermost error code is c004f01f though. Curiously this more usually related to activation and validation problems than Windows Update failures.

Here's the plan:

I'm first going to investigate the activation and validation route. I'm not for a minute trying to suggest you're running a counterfeit copy of Windows (you aren't are you?) primarily because if this was a counterfeit copy of Windows it wouldn't show that by causing a Windows Update failure and rollback. It would display a popup balloon asking you to go genuine. **However** - file system or registry corruptions of Windows files (which can cause Windows Update failures) can also appear very much like file tampering --> the computer thinks it's non-genuine. Windows Update errors and false positive activation and validation issues go hand in hand. For this reason we often use activation and validation diagnostic tools as a means to quickly spotting the file system or registry corruptions causing the Windows Update problems.

Please download - http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/F/3/9F3DED28-A521-4352-B8A4-20368D0CC1AA/MGADiag.exe and paste the log here. It may or may not help.

However, if I'm being honest, my suspicion is that it will not help. We've got another big clue - the affected component "Microsoft-Windows-TabletPC-InputPanel, Culture=neutral, Version=6.1.7601.xxxxx, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35, ProcessorArchitecture=amd64, versionScope=NonSxS", and a further hint from SFCFix earlier. I've got a feeling this might be Component key damage in the registry. I'll check on that later.

Richard

Thanks for your response!
All machines are activated via KMS. I dont think there are any issues with activation.

Okay, thanks for that. It hasn't flagged any particular concerns with regards to file tampering/corruption nor any concerns with regards to the machine's genuine validity. I'm presently having a coffee break in my university's maths department with little time to draw up full instructions right now. I'll post the next steps this evening if that's okay with you :)

One possible culprit I might mention is the Software Protection Service (SppSvc) itself. I've seen several service failures that generate update rollbacks and CMIADAPTER errors in CBS. HTTP is a common one, but I've seen others, as well. One thing I might recommend as a possible solution is to replace the SppSvc service key with a known good replacement (usually with a hive replacement, not a .REG, as permissions will be retained with a hive file). To the OP, I will let Niemiro detail any such instructions, as far as effecting this repair, if he deems it necessary.

Hello again!

I'm sorry about my slight delay here. I've been very busy working on the new version of SFCFix. Can you please collect the Components hive for me to examine?

Step#1 - Retrieve Components Hive

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named COMPONENTS.
  • Copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
  • Now right click on the COMPONENTS file that is on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file (COMPONENTS.zip) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBack program now.

@Surfpunk - that's a really great suggestion actually. Thanks for dropping by. I intend to look at the Components hive first as I've got a feeling the problem might be in there but if it's not I'll look where you suggest too. I believe that if that were the problem though then MGADiag should have picked it up earlier - one of the reasons I ran MGADiag in the first place. I'll wait and see to find out for sure though :)

Richard

Thanks Richard,
Will see if I can get on this today

Thank you! Best of luck :)

If you have any problems (you shouldn't do) let me know anyway. We usually use SFCFix with a
Code:
Collect::
COMPONENTS

script to do this. The system's been a little patchy the last few days whilst I rolled out the SFCFix Version 3 website backend but I think it's back now. If we run into any difficulties with the RegBak method (again, we shouldn't), we can try SFCFix too.
