Hello I'm hoping someone can help me as I've been running all over the place, trying all sorts of things but getting nowhere.

I'm not that computer savvy so be gentle.

Little icon keeps popping up saying "New updates are available" When I click it it says it's never checked or installed, I click "Check for updates" and it replies Windows could not search for updates. Error 80073712

Also when I go to shut down the little icon is there that says "Installs updates and shuts down" It takes a long time to shut down but no updates go in, then when I log back on it does the same again.

Thank You.

Fred.

Hi Fred,

I have not heard of COMPONANTS before, can you please upload it via Onedrive or Dropbox and provide me a link please?

Alex

Sorry I'm not sure how to do that could you give me a dummies guide please, I don't have an account with either dropbox or onedrive should I open one or is there another way.

Thank you.

Hi Fred,

The COMPONANTS hive has the contents of what the COMPONENTS hive is supposed to look like. Let's see if we can switch them over.

  1. Click on the
    Win7Orb_zps4dae3b32.jpg
button. Inside the search box type in CMD
  2. Right click on CMD => Choose Run as Administrator
  3. Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following commands (one by one)
    ren C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS comp.del
    ren C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONANTS COMPONENTS
If you got any error here please don't continue with the rest of the instructions.

Please follow the instructions Here to run the System Update Readiness Tool.

SFC /SCANNOW

  1. Click on the
    Win7Orb_zps4dae3b32.jpg
button. Inside the search box type in CMD
  2. Right click on CMD => Choose Run as Administrator
  3. Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following command SFC /SCANNOW
  4. Please wait for this to Finish before continuing with the rest of the steps.

Convert CBS.log to CBS.txt

  2. Press Enter
  3. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please upload CBS.txt to this thread

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to you next post please upload via Dropbox or ge.tt

Hello Alex, sorry for late reply.

Will have to try tomorrow and get back to you.

Regards.

Fred.

Hi Fred,

No worries. Let me know how it goes :)

Also we are going to have to look a the possible cause of hard drive damage from this file renaming itself. Can you please run Seatools for a short and long test and post back the results?

Thanks

Alex

Hello Alex, sorry for delay again.

I seem to be going wrong somewhere.

#1 I got as far as pressing Enterto get the CBS.txt but nothing happened and it didn't show up on my desktop.

#2 I downloaded and I think managed to burn Seatools (never done that before so all new to me) restarted but nothing.

Sorry, I'm obviously doing something wrong.

Regards.

Fred.

Hi Fred,

Did the commands work to rename the COMPONANTS to COMPONENTS?

We can get the logs another way.

SFCFix Collect CBS
  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download SFCFix.txt, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFixScript.txt - do not rename it.
  3. On your Desktop, you should now see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFixScript.txt.
  4. Drag the file SFCFixScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  5. SFCFix will now begin to upload your CBS logfiles to our server.
  6. Upon completion, a log should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  7. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

If all goes well, you should see that your logfiles have now been added to your thread.

Hi Fred,

Did you drag and drop SFCScript.txt onto SFCfix? The output would of been a bit different if it worked.if it doesn't work again please try these steps

Export CBS folder

  1. Click the Start button
    StartButton_16x16.gif
    then click Computer.
  2. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
  3. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
  4. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  5. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
  6. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  7. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.
  8. Attach this to your next post please.

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to you next please post please upload via Dropbox or ge.tt

I will get some instructions for you tomorrow on how to boot from the cd.

Thanks

Alex

Tomorrow is fine, we have different time zones.

Hi Fred,

That worked perfectly. Thank you. Issue is we have another error now indicating that there is a pending transaction (or the machine thinks there is)

Can you boot into the recovery environment, and launch command prompt please: How to use the Windows 7 System Recovery Environment Command Prompt

When command prompt is launched the first command to enter is wmic logicaldisk get name. you will be given a similar output to:

Code:
X:\Sources>wmic logicaldisk get name
Name
C:
D:
E:
X:

Now when you are in the RE the drive letters will often move around. start with the first letter that was provided in the list and enter in the following command (for this example we will use C:\ as it is the first one)

dir C:\
-This will display all the folders in the root drive of C

Can you see a folder called C:\Windows in list?
-If you can see C:\Windows then run the DISM command as DISM /Image:C:\ /Cleanup-Image /RevertPendingActions

If you can not see the Windows folder move onto the next Drive letter that we obtained with wmic logicaldisk get name and type in dir <DRIVE LETTER> (replace <DRIVE LETTER> with the drive you would like to check), can you see the Windows Folder?
-If yes, enter in the following command DISM /Image:C:\ /Cleanup-Image /RevertPendingActions and changed the C to what ever Drive letter has the Windows folder

Its just a case of going through each drive letter that was produced from the first list until the Windows folder is found then run the DISM command on that drive.

Once that is done please try WU again

Hello Alex

Im stuck cant put in a backward slash it keeps adding a W

Thank you

Fred
