Hello,

I would just like to make you aware we currently have an up to 72 hour response time in the Windows Update forum due to the large amount of threads and severe lack of staff. All the Windows Update staff are also in full time education.

In addition, Niemiro is currently ill, and will get to you when he is better.

Hello itzAltaf, welcome to Sysnative!

Now this issue is very interesting, but I think I've fixed it. Your COMPONENTS hive was failing to load completely:

After a few binary repairs, I've managed to get it to load in regedit and all of the keys are visible, so I'm fairly confident that this will work. Now I can't stress the importance of keeping a backup of your components hive, so follow my instructions clearly and you should be okay:

Replace COMPONENTS Hive

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Please download the below file, components.zip and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Right-click on the file and select Extract All...
  3. Tick the box labelled Show extracted files when complete then click Extract
  4. A window will open showing a file: components (it has no file extension)
  5. Then navigate to C:\Windows\system32\config and rename the file components to components.bak.
  6. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the components file on your Desktop into this folder.
  7. Right-click on the Start
    w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  8. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  9. When DISM finishes scanning your component store, zip up and attach your CBS log to your next post:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Note: If, at any point, you are displayed an error saying the file is in use, or access denied, reboot and try again.

Hmm, the good news is that I couldn't see any errors flicking through your CBS log, the bad news is that there's no sign of the dism log there so can you upload this for me please:

C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log

Also, is Windows Update still failing?

Tom

Great! You're good to go then, as dism has fixed everything it found:

Re: windows 8 update error 800703F1 FIXED

Hi,

I had suffered the same problem as mentioned in the topic. Components store got curropted after a windows update (or I don't know exactly the reason). I had no HDD error. I tried every solution what I found, but none of them worked. I tried to find registry hive repair tool, but I can't find any.

Finally I tried the Linux based hivexsh utility. This tool can load windows registry hives. Luckily this tool could load my components file. I have created a new test key and commited the changes. After committing windows was able to load the hive again.
Here are the commands I used:
hivexsh -w components
Welcome to hivexsh, the hivex interactive shell for examining
Windows Registry binary hive files.

Type: 'help' for help summary
'quit' to quit the shell

components\>ls
CanonicalData
ccpinterface
DerivedData
Installers
ServicingStackVersions
components\> add test
components\> ls
CanonicalData
ccpinterface
DerivedData
Installers
ServicingStackVersions
test
components\> commit
components\> exit
I think my hive had only some header curruption and this app fixed it when I commited any changes.
First I loaded the hive with regedit and deleted the test key than I followed tom982's guide by issuing:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

I hope it helps for others.
