Windows 8.1 corrupted update files

Hi,

I suspect my computer crashed out during an update install. Windows Defender now fails to turn on, except when I poke it, and then only sometimes. Security updates get gummed up a bit in the Window Update control panel as well.

Something is wrong in the store files, such that DISM won't work any more, citing corruption. I did get SFC /Scannow to pretend nothing is wrong after many attempts and the control panel troubleshooter seems to think it fixes the problem over and over. Resetting the NET/WINSCOK stuff didn't work for me, but maybe I just didn't do it well. SFCFix no longer finds corruption after a couple of fixes and ComponentScanner found 6 or 7 issues that it though were inconsequential unless I was having problems.

Hoping you guys can help?

My CBS folder is too big to upload because I have run the stuff too many times. Attached is everything but the persistent log and two of the CAB files.

Cheers

Hello and welcome,

I suspect my computer crashed out during an update install.
Do you know which update ?

SFCFix no longer finds corruption after a couple of fixes
Did it automaticly fixed the issues or did you add a fix ?

The first step is a scan only. It does not fix anything.

Warning: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Do not run this script on another machine.
  1. Download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:
64-bit: Downloading Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
Note: Your antivirus program may report FRST incorrectly as an infection. If so, disable the real-time protection when downloading and running FRST.
  2. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  3. Right-click on FRST64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  4. Press the Fix button.
  5. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  6. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  7. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  8. Attach the logfile Fixlog.txt to your next reply.

Yes, I used SFCFIX to correct two different problems on separate runs. Thanks for the help. I'm resisting the urge to run DISM, etc., now that I ran this new exe.

Restarted to see if it would fix anything, did not. Ran the ComponentsScanner to see if anything changed with the fix. Nothing did.

And you did say it would not fix anything, oops.

Provide the Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again. Note: If you find that you need to reboot and are unable to because this is a server then try Option#2 below.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to Gofile or WeTransfer and just provide the link here.

Option#2 (only if you are unable to follow the previous instructions)

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named COMPONENTS.
  • Copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
  • Now right-click on the COMPONENTS file that is on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file (COMPONENTS.zip) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Gofile or WeTransfer and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBak program now.

WARNING! The following fix is specific to the user's system in this thread only. No one else should follow these instructions, as it could damage your system.
  • Move the file

    SFCFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it on your desktop.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Attach that file to your next reply.

First file attached. Windows popped up a blurb asking me to register windows. It didn't use that word though, if it asks on restart I'll know the right word for the next post.

Windows popped up a blurb asking me to register windows.
Not sure why. I'll assume you use Windows legitimately.

Please perform Step 2 in my previous post also.

Run the tool ComponentsScanner again and report the result.
Any remaining issues ?

The good news. ComponentsScanner found nothing to report.

Bad news, the activate windows thing is back, weird.

Windows Defender won't start unless I run the troubleshooter (that resets the net stuff), which says (as before):
Potential Windows Update error detected 0x80070490 as it likes to and windows update components must be repaired.

Windows Update gave me an error when I asked to check for updates Code 8024A000, but ran the 2nd time.

Running DISM /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth now and will update.

Result: the component store is repairable.
The operation completed successfully.

Now running /startcomponentcleanup
Yeah, and there we have a problem. The component store has been corrupted.

Let me try a restart....

Windows defender didn't work on restart. Until troubleshooter. Same as before. Bits crypt. Same errors. Defender works after a couple of tries.

For variety, I tried DISM /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth. It claims its fixed...checking by restarting etc.

The good new is that all sorts of things are thinking they are working right now, even if it's still kind of broken, it seems. Narrative process below.

Windows Defender did not work, 2 tries. I ran windows update, ran defender, first time it said definitions were up to date. I ran it again and it turned on.

The troubleshooter was not in used at that point. That is giving the same sorts of messages.

Ran SFC /Scannow. No problems.

Attached is a copy of the CBS file that I made by duping and making it a text file manually.
