[SOLVED] Windows 7 will not update to SP1 - 0x800B0100

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 fails to install with the following error code: 800B0100

I tried sfc / scannow and no errors were found.

I also tried the System Update Readiness Tool then tried reinstalling SP1; however, it still failed with the same error code.

The CBS log files are attached. Any help would be appreciated. I would just reinstall the OS; however, the computer is a laptop with a broken primary monitor and I'm not able to run the HP recover utility without a working built in monitor.

Hello Gabriel, and welcome to Sysnative :)

After looking through your logfiles, I need you to run the Microsoft Fix-It here: You receive a "0x80070002" or "0x80070003" error code after you download an update from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or from Windows Server Update Services

You must run it in Aggressive Mode.

I know that it doesn't list your error code, but I am saying that it is relevant in this particular case. Basically, it will perform several fixes, and one of them applies to your situation. It is just easier to run a neat, automated tool, rather than having to fix it manually.

Once you have run it, please re-start your computer, re-run Windows Update, and let me know whether that resolves your problem.

Error code 0x800B0100 is an extremely common error code, but has several causes. You had the rarest cause, but a nice and easy to fix one. Just on the off-chance you are interested, a little background information (both for you and perhaps future readers too):

Because it is so common, there is a lot written online about this error code, but much of it is based on guesswork and slightly dubious research.

In the context of Windows Update, there are two "proper" fixes.

The first thing to do is download and install the System Update Readiness Tool: What is the System Update Readiness Tool?

Just installing this tool will resolve a small number of cases. But when it does not, the solution lies in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file.

If there are any errors in this logfile, you have found the problem, and Windows Update will not work until you have fixed these errors. Any other fixes you see online will be futile and will not resolve the problem.

These errors can be very difficult to solve. It is best to post to an online forum such as this one and we will post you a fix specific for your computer.

Finally, if there are no errors in that logfile, and Windows Update still does not work, the fix is what I posted to @gmccarty. You must run this Fix-It in Aggressive Mode: You receive a "0x80070002" or "0x80070003" error code after you download an update from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or from Windows Server Update Services

During one of the steps there will be a little box to tick for "Aggressive Mode". Simply tick it :)

Remember to not use the Fix-It which pops up, but the one embedded in the article linked.

Thanks Richard. I solved it before I got your reply.
For my scenario, I had no errors in SURT log file, but the Fix it mentioned above did not work for me (although I didn't try it in Aggressive mode, because until you replied I did not know how to do that).
Turned out to be McAfee real time protection. I switched that off, and voila SP1 installed fine.
Hope this helps someone.

Hi, I am having the same issue as the original poster, however using the tool in aggressive mode doesn't resolve the issue. I have a copy of the errors in the CheckSUR.log file below. If you could help it would be appreciated. Thanks.
