Hello all,

this is a Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit SP1 installation (Greek language), that is used by my son.

I tried to disable some windows features the other day and received an unable to proceed error. The error persists no matter which windows feature I am trying to disable (IE 9, Windows Search etc). It also appears if I try to enable a feature.

After some reading, I found that an sfc /scannow was in order. I did so, but sfc reported that it found errors that it could not repair. Reading the cbs.log as per sfc /scannow detected some corrupt files.. unable to fix.. what to - Microsoft Community and using takeown and icacls I managed to repair some files, specifially dskquota.dll, ehres.dll, PRINTLGT.IMD (although I did not save permissions first with icacls...), so now sfc does not complain about them. However, sfc /scannow still complains about some files:

* authfwsnapin.dll (which I did copy over from the win7 dvd, but for some reason I am still having the same error). Could it be that this is from SP1? I do not have access to a Win 7 sp1 dvd unfortunately...
* mshwkorrIME.dll
* Title_Page_Ref_PAL.wmv

Attached, please find the cbs.log in zipped format. Any help will be appreciated. I just want to avoid reformatting this thing...

authfwsnapin.dll (which I did copy over from the win7 dvd, but for some reason I am still having the same error). Could it be that this is from SP1? I do not have access to a Win 7 sp1 dvd unfortunately...

You're spot on here, AuthFWSnapin.dll is a SP1 file and that's why SFC still doesn't like it. Anything with a version number of 6.1.7601.* is from SP1.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.

    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/16537616/SFCFix/Scripts/Cosmos/SFCFix.zip

  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a files should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl + C) and Paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Well, I ran into some problems here. When doing so, something was printed in the command line window opened, but was very fast. Bottomline is that the txt file produced was empty. So I started a cmd prompt as administrator, navigated to the desktop where both files were saved and entered:
Code:
sfcfix.exe sfcfix.zip

The following came up, just before an empty txt file got produced:
Code:
Welcome to SFCFix by niemiro and sysnative.com.

Processing directive 1 of 1 (PowerCopy::)
Failed to process all directives successfully.

I guess there is something wrong here, that is why I did not use sfc /scannow afterwards...

Hi Cosmos,

Thanks for stopping and letting me know. I've never experienced this happening before so I have asked the developer of SFCFix, niemiro, to have a look. Please be patient whilst we await his response :)

Tom

Hello Cosmos!

Can you please run SFCFix.exe without a script, just double click on the .exe file. Can you then post the log. One of three things will happen. Either an empty logfile will again be produced, or a header and footer only logfile will be produced, or the last failed logfile will be printed. This will help me to narrow down the problem.

Thank you!

Richard

An empty file was produced again. The output of the program on the command line is as follows:
Code:
Welcome to SFCFix by niemiro and sysnative.com.

Failed to read script or malformed script.
Successfully processed all directives.

Please note that I had already taken ownership of file Authfwsnapin.dll and add administrators access to it with icacls. Furthermore, I noticed that in sfcfix.zip, there was this line {ARCHIVE}\Title_Page_Ref_PAL.wmv C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-o..ediadisc-style-pets_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_74b952f385139ecf\Title_Page_Ref_PAL.wmv

Notice the ".." in the middle of the line. Might be a powercopy thingie, might not...

Since we are waiting for a fix to sfcfix, I might ask as well: do you believe that a corrupt repository could be the cause of my errors trying to disable/enable specific windows features?

Hello again :)

Really sorry about the delay. It has been a busy week, and this bug took a bit of fixing :p

However, I think that all is good now. Can you please delete any copies of sfcfix.exe you still have, download a new, updated copy here: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/downloads/sfcfix/

and try again?

Thank you!

Richard
