Hi!

I am having some issues attempting to check for updates on Windows 7 x64. I am receiving error code 80070002 from windows update. Not sure how to proceed. I currently cannot perform any windows backups, or upgrade to Windows 10. I have run through your recommended diagnostics and attached the logs as you requested.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to a file sharing service and just provide the link here.

Step 1 - Replace Components Hive Manually

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download COMPONENTS.ZIP and save to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on it and select Extract all.... Make sure the "Show extracted files when complete" is checked and click Extract.
  3. Now we have the COMPONENTS file that we will be using to replace your current one.
  4. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config
  5. Right-click on the current COMPONENTS file and select rename. Rename it to COMPONENTS.bad.
Note: If you get an error that the file is in use, reboot your computer and then try again.
  6. Take the file from the Components folder on your desktop and paste it into C:\Windows\System32\config

Ok, I have completed the instructions. I restarted the PC and attempted to run windows update. I received the same error code 80070002 - "Windows update encountered an unknown error".

Please find CBS folder attached.

To add to this, I did attempt the windows 10 upgrade before posting on this forum and completing some of your recommended fixes.

Should I re-attempt the windows 10 upgrade?

I tried the Windows 10 Upgrade with no success. I received the same error message:

0x8007025D - 0x2000C The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during APPLY_IMAGE operation.

Is there anything I can do to get around this error?

Is the setuperr.log located here:"C:\Windows\Logs\DPX". I have attached the log file from this path.

If that's incorrect, can you let me know where the path for the log file is?

Thank you!
