[SOLVED] [Win8 x64] Games for Windows Live not installing: error 0x800b0100

I'm having a rather convoluted set of problems with getting Games for Windows live to work together with retail-bought games. I could install GFWL with the client provided with Batman: Arkham City easily enough, but apparently that's an older version, and what's more, not compatible with my 64-bit Windows 8. So I searched the web for a workaround, which involved downloading the latest version (from here: Download the Games for Windows Client | PC Games Client - Xbox.com) and running it in compatibility mode and as an administrator. However, when I run the installer, no matter what the settings, it returns with "Install Failed" and the error code 0x800b0100. Sometimes the code is 0x800b0003 instead, but this seems to be random.
Like I said, some versions of the installer do work properly, just not the one fitting for my system.

For some reason, my CBS folder exceeds the file size limit (over 20 MB even when zipped), but here are the logs as directed to by the failed download client (in User/AppData/Local/Microsoft/GFWLive/Install/Logs):

View attachment xliveinstall.log

Any help will be appreciated!

Re: Games for Windows Live not installing (error code 0x800b0100)

Both of those errors indicate a lack of signature trust with whatever is shipped with that installation package. Are you getting any root certificates warnings in your event log on that PC, by chance? They'd likely be logged in either the Application or System event logs. Otherwise, I'm not sure exactly why that would be happening, but following this KB article might help:

Error 0x800B0100 when you try to install Windows Updates or Microsoft Updates

Hey there,

I can help you with this error, but I will need the CBS folder. Can you upload it to a free file sharing site such as Dropbox for me please?

I will look at this later, I'm about to leave to go to school :-)

Regards,
Stephen

Thank you for responding so quickly!

Alright, I uploaded CBS.zip into Dropbox, you can find it here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/pmnu5w4a4n3316y/CBS.zip

As for cluberti's suggestion, I'll admit I've never had to consult the event logs before - I know how to access them, but what should I look for?

Re: Games for Windows Live not installing (error code 0x800b0100)

Hey there,

Please download and install the System Update Readiness Tool from here: What is the System Update Readiness Tool?
Please save the download somewhere convenient you can later find it as we may well need it again later. It Save you a second download :)
Also please be aware that the tool can take up to an hour (very occasionally even longer) to complete. Please be patient.
Once it has finished, please upload C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log.

Regards,
Stephen

Re: Games for Windows Live not installing (error code 0x800b0100)

Apparently none of the downloads work for Windows 8, but I found an alternative suggestion here: Fixing component store corruption in Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 - The Windows Servicing Guy - Site Home - TechNet Blogs

Apparently the built-in DISM tool does the exact same thing the SUR is supposed to. So I ran the restore tool, but it came back with no reports of corruption, and the installer still isn't working. The approppriate report log is simply CBS.log, here's mine from after the restore tool ran its course:

Damn it. I keep forgetting you can't run SURT on Windows 8!!

Yes, you are very much correct, DISM is the Windows 8 version of SURT. I'll look at your log tomorrow, I'm not on my PC ATM.

Re: Games for Windows Live not installing (error code 0x800b0100)

Hi,

The DISM log does not contain the information I need. I'm not quite sure why...

Let's run DISM again....

Please start an Elevated Command Prompt: How to run an elevated command prompt

Copy and paste in

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

and let it complete.

Then I need your CBS folder:

Export CBS folder

  1. Browse to C:\Windows\ in Windows Explorer
  2. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
  3. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  4. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
  5. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  6. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.
  7. Attach this new file to your next post.

Regards,
Stephen

Hello :)

Please download and attempt to install this .msi file: http://download.gfwl.xboxlive.com/content/gfwl-public/redists/production/xliveredist.msi

Does it install correctly? If it doesn't, use this Fix-It to enable verbose windows installer logging: How to enable Windows Installer logging

re-run the installation wizard, then use the above Fix-It to re-disable that verbose logging. Then browse to C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Local\temp, sort by Date Modified, and then copy into a new folder on your Desktop any files with a name of the form "MSI*.log" where "*" represents any number of random characters. Right click on the folder > send to > compressed (zipped) folder, and upload here.

It might just be a bad download, but if it's not, it suggests a different problem. Depending on what the problem is, the verbose logging either will or won't help. I suspect it probably won't help much, but we may as well get it anyway, just on the off-chance the problem isn't what I'm expecting.

Thank you!

Richard

Alright, I did what niemiro suggested, and the installer worked just fine. The one I need to properly work with W8 still doesn't, though.

I also tried enabling verbose logging, but it didn't seem to create logs for the failed installation. I'm attaching the MSI files from installing and removing the file you linked to, in case they're any help.

Re: Games for Windows Live not installing (error code 0x800b0100)

Actually, forget everything - it was a bad download. Which is funny, because I downloaded and tried several copies of the installer before posting here, just to be sure, but now I tried downloading a new one, which suddenly worked, even though the old ones still don't...

Anyway, it was more or less my bad. But still, several thanks to everyone in here for the help, sorry to be wasting your time like this ^^'

That's amazing news! I actually initially suspected a bad download (which was why I asked you to redownload and install individually the failing component - as I suspected it would work from a different download, and then remain installed for the rest of the initial installation to proceed). Anyway, my overly complex master plan was thwarted by the simple....re-download it. I feel bad :p

Anyway, a great result and I'm happy for you!
