[SOLVED] [Win7SP1 x64] Can't install WU. WU error 0x80070643.

Windows 7 x64 machine. Windows update is trying to apply .Net 4.5.2 update and it is failing with error code 651 (I think) on the screen. Same issue trying to install an update to Silverlight. Tried .Net repair, no change. So I uninstalled .Net and had Windows Update search again. This time it wants to install .Net 4.5.2, 4.6.1 and another higher version. Deselected everything but 4.5.2 and it now fails with code 651 (screenshot attached). Found a Microsoft Knowledge Base article on how to turn on verbose logging and recreated the problem and captured the Windows Update.log (attached). The error code in the WindowsUpdate.log looks like this:

The 0x80070643 error code seems to be a generic code with no specific direct cause. It would be appreciated if someone could take a look at the log and provide some direction on what to do next.

I've run sfc /scannow and no problems were found. Tried to run System Update Readiness Tool and it failed to run.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

I'm doing this via remote support, so it might be a couple of days before we can match schedules to do another session.

In the meantime, please educate me. As stated in my original post, sfc /scannow reported no errors. Since this is the case, what is the value of running sfcfix.exe? I thought this tool was for fixing problems that sfc /scannow identifies, but is unable to fix.

Likewise, what is the value of gathering the cbs.log file(s)? Aren't they only for sfc output? Does Windows Update write to them, too?

Trying to follow directions on how to upload CBS logs when they are too large to upload via normal process, and the following step does not work:

Download SFCFixScript.txt and save this to your Desktop as well: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...cript.txt?dl=1
Clicking on that link results in a 404 (file not found) error.

And I'm not sure this will work for my situation. The problem is with a machine I access remotely. I have the CBS.logs.zip file on my local hard disk. I'm assuming the procedure above should be run on the machine having the problem. However, I can upload the CBS.logs.zip file to my google drive and send you the link via email or a PM on this forum. Let me know if this is OK with you or if you have another way to do this.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Sorry for the delay. Please do the following when you can.

Using the .NET Collect Utility

  1. Download collect.exe and save to your desktop.
  2. Go ahead and run the tool
  3. The utility creates a compressed cabinet of all the needed logs to %TEMP%\vslogs.cab.
  4. Please zip/attach to this post or if too large, send using a service such as SendSpace.

Can you confirm that the current state of your machine is that all .NET Frameworks are removed?

Cleanup tool has been run. Logs from the tool now attached to this thread.

What's next? (Note: I did not try to install .Net since you did not specify that I should do so. I did not want to mess up whatever next step you have in mind just in case it is something other than to try the install again.)

OK, uncheck ALL except .NET Framework 4.7. Attempt only that one. If it fails, please repeat the steps in Post#6.

The zip file seems to be missing a file. Can you check your temp directory for the following? It won't be the exact name but should start with something like that.

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.2 Setup_20170727_194344448.html

To get to the temp directory, click your Start button and then type %temp% in the search box and click OK.

The file you mentioned does not exist (see attachment 'temp directory contents.png')

And, I don't know if this will help, but before I opened this thread I tried installing .Net 4.5.2 via the standalone install package (i.e. outside of Windows Update). It reported a problem with the Windows Installer. But, I was able to install another program, so I'm totally confused if this is a Windows Installer issue, a Windows Update issue, or there is some other corruption. See 'Standalone 4.5.2 install failure.png' for the exact wording.
