Hello,
My first post here, after I've been a lurker for years.
I am having problems with 2 updates : KB 2952664 and KB4093118.
Both fail with error 80073071.

Problems started in January, around the time when MS started to push out patches for Spectre and Meltdown. No problems before that.
I know KB2952664 is known to cause trouble, AND this update is already installed, according to Control Panel. It was (last?) installed in November.

I have tried the following (among other less than helpful advice) :
Win7 inbuilt troubleshooter and the WindowsUpdate Diagnostic tool.
SFC "did not find any integrity violations".
SFCfix (have log)
SURT (have log)

Both and SFCfix and CheckSUR logs report a total of 784 errors. The errors are all missing packages, for a total of 41 unique KBs.
I tried to download all the KBs as standalone msu from the Windows Update Catalogue, but it was difficult because some of the packs did not exist specifically for Win7. In those cases, I used msu for Vista x64. I put them in the Windows Temp directory, under CheckSUR-servicing-Packages. This did not work.
I then mounted a system image from January, in the hopes that it would be ok, but it had excatly the same problem.

I'm posting here now, hoping for help to avoid having to perform a clean install.

Since no one would take this on, I have been doing some more digging around on the forum.
Result : I have downloaded all 41 updates with missing .cat and .mum files. Have extracted each one with KB-extractor and copied the files that CheckSUR.log reported as missing.
I have put them in %windir% Temp directory, under CheckSUR/servicing/Packages.
Is this correct, or should they be moved to the servicing directory ?
What is the next step....running CheckSUR ?

Thank you for answering, softwaremaniac :-)
Sorry about the delay, been busy with a big floor-ball tounament this weekend.
The SURT run fixed about half the problems of missing files. It also lead to a demand for more files, some from the same KBs as before, some from different ones, for a total 0f 48 KBs.
So I extracted those as well, and ran SURT again, quite a time consuming job to produce a convenient joblist, DL the KBs and extract/copy files . Lots more problems were fixed this time, now there are files missing from only 7 KBs. And I already have all of those downloaded, so the job should be easier this time.

One problem is KB 2952664. Missing files :

servicing\packages\Package_1_for_KB2952664~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.10.5.mum
servicing\packages\Package_1_for_KB2952664~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.14.2.mum
servicing\packages\Package_1_for_KB2952664~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.16.0.mum
servicing\packages\Package_1_for_KB2952664~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.17.5.mum
servicing\packages\Package_1_for_KB2952664~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.19.0.mum
servicing\packages\Package_1_for_KB2952664~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.20.1.mum
servicing\packages\Package_1_for_KB2952664~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.22.2.mum
servicing\packages\Package_1_for_KB2952664~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.9.8.mum
....and the .cat counterparts, of course.

I'm guessing these are from different versions of KB2952664 ? As mentioned in my first post, this file is already installed, but WindowsUpdate wants to install it again. I'm thinking it might be better to uninstall the existing version...but afraid that would create more problems than it solves ?

CheckSUR3.log is attached.

You are correct. We will uninstall the update:

Remove Update Manually
1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, press enter
wusa /uninstall /KB:2952664

4. Let me know if it says it was successful or if there are any errors.

No errors reported....command seemed to have been executed, as the utility simply returned to the prompt.

Yep, you're right...I rebooted, and it is still listed when I view installed updates from the Contrpl panel. :-)

By the way, I have added the files that were missing in the last SURT report. Some of them turned out to be files I had added earlier, some not.
I'm holding off on running SURT again, till the problem with KB2952664 is solved....ok ?

I'm now down to missing files for 2 KBs....KB3150513 and KB2952664. The rest were just due to sloppy work on my part, for having copied files from the wrong KB version without noticing. I was able to dig up the files I needed, except for the cases above. Both are so-called "compatibility" patches, meant to be a part of the push for Win7 users to update to Win10. I have searched high and low for the older versions, but cannot find them.

When I try to uninstall those 2 patches, I get Error 80070490 Element not found. Is there any way to get rid of them ?
CheckSUR.log attached.

FRST Registry Search
1. Click your Start button and choose Control Panel.
2. In the upper right corner ensure the View by: is set to Category.
3. Select the Programs group.
4. Click the Turn Windows features on or off link. This will bring up the Windows Features dialog. Wait until this dialog populates with information.
Note: This loads your components hive which is what we want. Please keep this dialog open while you perform the remaining steps.
5. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
6. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
7. Copy and paste
KB2952664 into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.
8. When the scan is complete a notepad window will open with the results. Please copy and paste the contents in your next reply. If for some reason notepad doesn't open the file should be
saved on your desktop named SearchReg.txt.
9. You may close any remaining open windows now.

Firstly : I finally opened my eyes and saw the thread about versions of KB2852664, which fixed the missing files for that KB, except v.6.1.17.5.
Still missing the two files for KB3150513.

This is what happened when i tried the instructions in your last post :
The Windows Features window was blank.
Loaded the Components hive from C:\Windows\System32\config (file=text). That didn't help.
Ran DISM from elevated command prompt, and got the error in attached picture.
Pulled dism.log and zipped it for you.

Please repeat the instructions. If the Features are still blank, continue with the steps and attach SearchReg.txt for me to be able to assist. Also, DISM does not work in Win7 in the same way it does on later OS versions.

Got an error from FRST : Unable to create folder C:\FRST\HIVES
I ran the tool anyway, and this is the result :

Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (x64) Version: 25.04.2018

Running from C:\Users\Ghia\Desktop
Boot Mode: Normal

================== Search Registry: "KB2952664" ===========

====== End of Search ======

Let's try this differently:

Search with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST)

  • Download FRST64 and save it to the Desktop.
  • Open the Command Prompt as Administrator (Tutorial)
  • Type or copy/paste the following command:

dism /online /Get-FeatureInfo /FeatureName:TFTP|find "completed"

  • Wait for the command to finish with "The operation completed successfully" If it does not, please continue with the steps anyway.
  • Close the window "Administrator: Command Prompt"
  • Execute FRST/FRST64 right click on the icon
    FRST.jpg
and choose Run as Administrator. Make sure all other windows are closed.
(When the tool opens for the first time, you must click Yes on the disclaimer.)
    FRST_SearchRegistry.png
  • On the Search box (1) type or copy and paste the following text:
    KB2952664
  • Press the Search Registry button.
  • Wait for the search to finish FRST will produce a log called (SearchReg.txt) in the same directory the Tool is run from.
  • Please attach the log to your post.

No success message in command window.
The same errors appeared when starting FRST : Unable to create folder C:\FRST\HIVES Failed to update (1)
The log is the same, too :

Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (x64) Version: 25.04.2018
Ran by Ghia (01-05-2018 14:44:12)
Running from C:\Users\Ghia\Desktop
Boot Mode: Normal

====== End of Search ======

Ah...the error was just a permission issue with C.\FRST. Changed that, and now we have some results :

Step#1 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply
