Hi there,

I'm also facing the endless loop issue of "Restart your computer to install important updates" on Windows7. I tried a lot ways searching through various forums/blogs but none of them could resolve. I'm happy to find that the similar issues are easily solved on Sysnative forum. I ran the SFCFix.exe and following is the report it created.

Re: Win7 Loop - Restart your computer to install important updates

OK, please start with the following.

1. Click your start button and type cmd in the search box.
2. Right-click on cmd that comes up in the search results and select Run as administrator. Answer Yes to the UAC prompt if it appears.
3. Copy/Paste the following into the command-prompt window and hit enter.
reg query HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate /s >1.txt && notepad 1.txt

4. Notepad will open showing the WU info. Can you copy and paste this into your next reply?

Re: Win7 Loop - Restart your computer to install important updates

This should fix you up.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Re: Win7 Loop - Restart your computer to install important updates

Brian, I followed your instructions. In the text file, I found "failed to complete successfully" for one of the three items. I just repeated the process and all of them executed successfully. Following is the content of SFCFix.txt file. Now I see "Download and Install updates for your computer" in Windows Update window. Hope I'm out of the loop. Your tools are super simple and solutions work awesome. Thanks a lot for the help. One more thing, I don't want to upgrade to Win10. How can I stop windows update from downloading or installing any updates related W10?

Re: Win7 Loop - Restart your computer to install important updates

You are all set. The free upgrade offer for Windows 10 has expired so you don't need to worry about that. Take care.

Re: Win7 Loop - Restart your computer to install important updates

Thanks Brian! But Windows10 problem is still there. I downloaded and installed all the updates and I see this. What is to be done now?

Re: Win7 Loop - Restart your computer to install important updates

I just restarted my computer without responding to Windows Upgrade window. It installed updates. After restarting, I checked Windows Update and I guess I'm back in the loop. I see "Restart your computer to install important updates".

Need your help again BrianDrab!

Re: Win7 Loop - Restart your computer to install important updates

Re: Win7 Loop - Restart your computer to install important updates

OK, please do the following.

Remove Update Manually
1. Click on the Start
Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, press enter
wusa /uninstall /KB:3184143

4. Let me know if it says it was successful or if there are any errors.

Re: Win7 Loop - Restart your computer to install important updates

I just did that. No errors, it got uninstalled and system rebooted.

Re: Win7 Loop - Restart your computer to install important updates

Brian,

This is bonnyjean a new member and I am not sure I am doing this right but I do have the same problem you have just solved. Windows Update constantly asks for a restart because of open files being used. I believe I have narrowed the problem down to this issue that Avinash had.

I see the Registry Key that was discussed that says "RequiresReboot" at the end of the key and following instructions I read in another forum I deleted just the word "RequiresReboot" and went to Windows Update and was able check for available updates and install 2. After a reboot it put the "RequiresReboot" back in the registry at the end of that Key. How can I get rid of it permanently and is this the right thing to do?

Will you be able to help me?

Bonnyjean
