WIN Updates restart, shut down "hung", powered off, SFC cannot commit repairs

Running: Lenovo ThinkPad T60p, Vista Pro
..
Feb 2013, WIN Updates (5) restart initiated, shut down hung.
"Stopping ...." displayed for 30 minutes or so.
I had to power-off to get past the problem.

SFC /SCANNOW shows:
..
"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired
them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For
example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
..
The system file repair changes will take effect after the next reboot."

A. run SFC /SCANNOW , always shows:
"found corrupt files and successfully repaired them."

"configuring update stage 2 of 3, 100% complete"

I would appreciate any information that would resolve this problem.
I do NOT want to spend a week completely rebuilding the ThinkPad from Recovery Disks.
My last system backup (Apricorn) was 6 months ago.

Hello, and welcome to Sysnative :)

Your SFC corruptions are caused by a small bug in one of the updates from that patch Tuesday which causes SFC to incorrectly detect as corrupted some perfectly fine files.

That is what is happening here. Your SFC corruptions are absolutely nothing to be concerned about. This problem has been reported to Microsoft, and I am hoping for a fix hopefully on the next patch Tuesday, although we shall have to wait and see to be sure.

For now, know that there is nothing to be concerned about. Just ignore the SFC results, and there is no need to re-run it again.

Next...

"configuring update stage 2 of 3, 100% complete".

Please restart your computer to push through any currently pending SFC operations, and then restart again and let me know whether this still occurs.

If it does, it is an entirely separate problem I would be happy to help you with.

As the ThinkPad is restarting, there is a very brief flash "Please wait",

D. Right after your response, then I did 2 cycles. Checked sfcdetails.txt, they are identical.

Hello again :)

Please download the System Update Readiness Tool from Microsoft ->here<-. Save the tool to a convenient location as it may be necessary to run it again.
After the download has completed, double-click the file and wait while it initializes.
Click Yes to begin installation.

Then, once it has completed installing (please be patient, it may take up to an hour (or very occasionally longer) to complete):

Export CBS folder

Click the Start button

then click Computer.
Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
Find and double click on the Logs folder.
Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.

Please upload it here, and I will take a look.

I really hoped that the System Update Readiness Tool would rectify the problem, but no-deal.
If we can't figure it out in a week or so then I'll restore the system from the latest (yet old) Apricorn system backup. That's a lot LESS painful than a complete re-build from the Recovery Discs. Thank you for your support. CBS.zip is attached.

This is good news, not bad :)

SURT detected no errors, so that is good.

And your SFC corruptions are absolutely nothing to be concerned about. Two patch Tuesdays ago, Microsoft released a slightly broken update which caused SFC to incorrectly detect its files as corrupt (simplistically). This is what is happening here, and what is happening to Vista computers across the world at the moment. The problem is with SFC - the actual files are not corrupt, will not cause a problem, and are nothing to be concerned about.

Microsoft have been notified about this issue, and I am hoping for a re-release next patch Tuesday (actually, I hoped for that last patch Tuesday too, but that fell through).

I have now checked lots of logs - SURT, CBS.log, and SFC logs. And there is nothing inside any of them to be concerned about.
