I went ahead and ran the windows update troubleshooter which I first ran days ago when I ran into the update problem. It reported fixing a few things (i.e. green check mark), but failed to fix one of the problems found. I ran it several times to confirm and it came up with the same error. I then began reaching out to this forum following the instructions as you recommended. With SURT not installing anymore, I decided to re-run the troubleshooter ... and to my surprise it reported all fixed (the one red 'not fixed' is now listing as 'fixed'): I'll try and run windows update again to see if the update installs. Perhaps all is fixed?

And with the latest development of SURT not installing, I would not be surprised if you had bigger issues than just updates. GSmartControl Follow the instructions below to test your hard drive health with GSmartControl: Download GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop; Execute gsmartcontrol.exe; Let the install complete and launch the programme. Identify your drive in the list, and double-click on it to bring up it's window (usually you'll find your drive by it's size or it's brand name); Go in the Perform Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete); Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply; Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply;

I did a clean boot and re-ran SURT. It never progressed beyond this screen for more than 8 hours: Tough problem apparently. My system is working otherwise - windows update installs the almost daily definition updates. It just won't install the January 2019 monthly quality rollup.

M mjz Well-known member Joined Jan 10, 2019 Posts 59 Jan 17, 2019 #30 I tried installing the update manually from here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4480970/windows-7-update-kb4480970 It failed. Installing KB4480970 on my windows 7 SP1 computer is not possible it seems. Don't know what else to try doing.

No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it. Save any open documents and close all open windows. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it. SFCFix will now process the script. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put Code: tags around the log to break up the text. Dropbox - SFCFix.zip Afterwards, run SURT and attach CheckSUR.log.
