I tried to update my win7 system with the latest update request from msft:

2019-01 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4480970)

and it failed. I never had this happen before and nothing I have tried has worked. I'm hoping someone here can help.

I ran scannow and it reported no errors. My system runs fine right now and will update the almost daily definition file rollups.

Help?

Anyone else having problems with the latest update (January 2019) from Microsoft??

Hello and welcome!

Please start with the following:

Windows Update Forum Posting Instructions

Step #2 run scan tool and it ran and reported no errors.

I tried to perform step #3 and install the package for my 64bit win7 sp1 system - but it got stuck at about 90% for 1 hour - just sitting there.
So I am stuck at this step.

(I read, however, that the January 2019 update that is failing to install introduces networking problems. Maybe it's best I don't "succeed" in getting this update to install?)

Thanks for any advice!

This is the tool I am trying to install. It's dated 2104 is this correct to use?

Download System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [October 2014] from Official Microsoft Download Center

I tried doing the steps as outlined in the link you listed:

[h=2]Rename software distribution backup folders[/h]

  • From Start, search for cmd
  • Select Command Prompt from the results
  • At the Command Prompt, type the following and then push Enter:

    Ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.bak
  • When that command completes, type the following and then push Enter:

    Ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.bak
  • Close the Command Prompt window, and reboot your computer.

But I get permission denied going this route even though I am running CMD in admin mode.

The tool was gone from the screen when I returned. I went ahead and ran SFCFix:

SFCFix version 3.0.1.0 by niemiro.

Microsoft Windows 7 Service Pack 1 - amd64

I copied the CBS log file to this shared link via Dropbox:

Hopefully clues on how and what needs fixing is in there.

Thank you for helping!

Ah, yes. This is a very corrupt system and will take several rounds of fixing:

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put tags around the log to break up the text.

Dropbox - SFCFix.zip

Afterwards, run SURT again and attach CheckSUR.log.

Yes - just realized. It was the acronym.

It's running - at the 'initializing installation step .... no installing progress yet. seems stuck. Last time I ran this, the green progress bar would start to show up pretty quickly.

SURT is still trying to "install" - same image as posted above. It never took this long to just install and get started (green bar progress).

Something is wrong. I'll leave it like this until you let me know.

(I'm beginning to think something is busted in my windows 7 update system as per your review of the CBS log. Perhaps I may need to just bite the bullet and upgrade to windows 10 which I would hate to do.
Windows definition files continue to update - it's just this rollup update which is failing. Perhaps I can just live with it this way until some future update comes out from msft and if that fails then move to a new OS. My computer works just fine otherwise. Boots quick, gets me to my work as before - just this update process is corrupted)

Nothing else is wrong. You have corrupt files and we are fixing them in batches. The reason the tool is running so slow is likely the 1500+ corruptions. Be patient.
