Hello all !
I had a look on your forum, and told to myself : there it is, the paradise for hopeless issues !
Thanks by advance to every people that will take the times to read this post.

Let me explain my problem :

i am working in a firm and we have many different WIN 7 PRO 64 master. The most recent one, following an update and a sysrep, present a particular issue when we try to downgrade to IE8 (we have installed IE9 on the master).
Actually, when we remove IE9 update, (from "dism" or "display installed update"), the system does not recover internet explorer 8. It left no IE at all. Nothing also appear in "Activate windows fonctionnality".
I have done a lot of research, and i think i finally found the issue, but i am not able to solve it.
With the "dism command" and the generate list of installed package ( dism /online /Get-Packages > %SYSTEMDRIVE%\Installable_Packages.txt ) i have been able to see an important difference between our masters able to downgrade and the one that can't.
The one that can't is missing the following packages :

Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-Optional-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~fr-FR~8.0.7601.17514 | Install‚ | Language Pack | 23/03/2011 14:27
Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-Optional-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~8.0.7601.17514 | Install‚ | Feature Pack | 23/03/2011 14:27

The strange fact is that, if i understand well, these packages are not from any KBupdate but from the source install package of windows7 (i mean embedded package). The only things we've done on the master is cleaning SP1 backups files with a dism special command, but how the hell could it have delete original packages ?

a "sfc /SCANNOW" does not resolve the problem,

The use of a "Windows6.1-KB947821-v31-x64.msu" did not resolve the problem.

I even tried to recover the different missing packages .cat and .num in C:\Windows\servicing\Packages from the valid master, copy them into the
C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages folder of the bad master and then exec Windows6.1-KB947821-v31-x64.msu again but does not work.

If i try to install the package manually with dism, i get the following errors :

dism.log

Hello, and welcome to Sysnative!

You've actually found the problem yourself:

The only things we've done on the master is cleaning SP1 backups files with a dism special command, but how the hell could it have delete original packages ?

That command does not delete backup files. That command deletes superceded packages. Here, once you install IE9, IE8 files are no longer needed - they are superceded. Under normal conditions Windows keeps them in winsxs so that IE8 can be recovered if you ever choose to uninstall IE9. However, the option exists to delete them using DISM. Unfortunately, as you have found out, once deleted you cannot recover IE8 if you ever choose to uninstall IE9.

The same applies to every superceded update. You cannot now uninstall the update which superceded it (as that would remove vital Windows components, with no replacements available, so Windows blocks the uninstallation).

Send me C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log. However, know that this issue is almost certainly unfixable.

Many thanks for your help.

Here is the persist.log

View attachment CheckSUR.persist.log

It have repaired some entry, just after having drop my num files into C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages.

This is a really bad case, i will be specialy careful when mastering from now.

Could it be possible to manually ad missing packages in winsxs folder ? Using something like rescue mode to get throught rights limitation ?

And also, do you think that a tool such as KUC Windows Update Checker and Hotfix Repository could resolve this kind of problem

Were there any more entries in that logfile at one time i.e. did you remove entries as you fixed them?

The only reason I ask is that CSI Missing Deployment Key is a registry corruption, not so much file system.

KUC won't help here, and trying to add the files back manually into winsxs will only makes things worse as there is a huge amount of registry data that also needs to be added to make it work properly. Very occasionally it is possible to repair, but I need to make a fuller assessment first.

Thank you.

Richard

As you've probably already surmised, installing an updated browser version into a master image is a really bad idea. A browser upgrade is a relatively large system change, and should be layered on to an image during deploy if at all possible, rather than baked in. IE8, IE9, IE10, and IE11 are all supported options for browsers on Windows 7, but sticking with IE8 in an image will make sure that if there's ever an IE12, you won't be migrating from a position outside of a default install / upgrade path, and you won't have to worry about downgrading necessarily either - just reimage back to IE8 and upgrade to a different version if something totally breaks during testing. This is true for all major components, not just IE - keep your master/base image as free from changes as possible, short of perhaps security updates and major software packages like Office, which are likely to change little over a 2-3 year span short of patches.

Hmmm, i don't think so ....
Or, as i did many different test, it is possible that i execute this one following IE9 uninstall.

Thanks for the advice. Be sure i will be careful from now, as i haven't got years of experience in mastering process. Every mistakes will teach me how to carefuly walk into microsoft distrib :grin1:
