Hi,

In the BSOD page John Carrona made the statement "For Vista, you can download the repair discs from different websites. If unable to locate them, shoot me a PM and I'll point you to them."
Is there a free version of the Vista repair disk available? If so, please send me the download link as the only ones I can find is from "neosmart" for either $20 or $40.

Thanks,
Dan

Re: Vista repair disk

They are no longer available for free, what issue are you having have you tried startup repair or booting into safe mode?

I'm getting BSoD STOP codes or cursor lockup after booting, but all is well after the 2nd or 3rd boot attempt until the next time I boot up where I go through the same hassle. I'd hate to restore my system back to day one (especially since as I said, all is well after multiple boot attempts). So I wanted to explore what Vista Repair could offer me, but not for $40 if M$ gave it for free on their original Vista disk.

I downloaded Nirsoft's BSoD analysis tool and its pointing to an error at ntoskrnl.exe + 57150 which I'm Googling for ideas.

Thanks,
Dan

Re: Vista repair disk

After several attempts, I was able to boot up and am running now so based on your reply I suppose "ntsokrnl" is not as corrupt as I feared; I sent you the dump info and will anxiously await further instructions.,
Thanks,
Dan

Re: Vista repair disk

Hi -

For info, ntoskrnl.exe = Windows NT Kernel and is simply listed as a default when no definitive cause can be identified.

Re: Vista repair disk

I just ran MEMTEST for the final time making it through 7+ passes without any errors found.
But I will assume since prior runs did find 276,992 errors that I do have a memory problem that is causing the BSoD screens to randomly occur (associated with the random pieces of bad memory my system attempts to access - is that correct?).

So unless you tell me otherwise, I'll pursue replacing my memory sticks in hopes of eliminating the problem.
Or is there a different "next step" I should follow?

Thanks for your interest,
Dan

Dan, before you replace the memory, it's worth a shot to remove and reseat the sticks then run Memtest again. A poor contact between the ram & mobo will generate errors or blue screens. Just ask if you don't know how to R&R the memory.

Good idea, I'll do that. If I use surgical gloves is that equivalent to an anti-static strap? Also, what about a vacuum cleaner is I see some dust? I never understood why compressed air is used since I thought that would just blow the dust around - no?
Thanks for your suggestion,
Dan

Vacuum is bad because it can produce static electricity at the entrance of the nozzle, use compressed air and blow the dust out of the case.

Gloves will not replace antistatic straps, simply touch a metal part of the case before touching any components.

use compressed air and blow the dust out of the case.

And do it Outside! :lolg:

What I do is: Power off the PC then remove the power cord
-Hold the power button in for about 10 seconds to discharge the caps
-Plug the power cord back in and R&R the memory, touching only the cardboard edge and not the modules or the gold contacts.
-Make sure the notches in the memory are lined up correctly and be sure you hear the locking tabs click on each end.

Will do - thanks for the tips!
R&R means "remove and reset" ?
Also, since I have no rugs (only tile) if I touch the case then no need to buy a discharge strap?
Dan

After I replace the memory & Vista's BSoDs go away, R&R will finally mean Rest & Relaxation once again - thanks!

Sorry, I missed a key step in the instructions below. The object isn't to ground yourself, it's to discharge static electricity in your body to a grounded source. That's why you'd touch the case while it's plugged in to a grounded power outlet.

use compressed air and blow the dust out of the case.

Thanks for the clarification - I updated my notes.
And if I see little or no dust I'll take a chance and blow the compressed air inside  !
