Hi Helpers,

My Toshiba laptop running Vista will no longer complete Windows Updates. The “checking for updates” bar just keeps moving back and forth. I have waited over two hours and it doesn't change.

sfc /scannow shows no errors, nor does SFCFix.

Your help would be greatly appreciated. :thumbsup2:

Thank you

Hello and welcome

Due to the precise nature of your corruption, you will receive help from a user named CKing123. He's one of our senior trainees here who's in his final phrase of his studies and needs to gain some real world experience in specific areas of Windows Update. This means that he'll be assisting you, but that I will first need to double check and approve his fixes before he posts them to you. If anything this is a good thing for you because it means that you've got at least two of us watching over your thread, but it will unfortunately add a slight delay between each reply. I hope that you understand and can accept the need for us to train up new members in this way in order to carry on doing what we do here, however, if for any reason you object to this setup, I will happily take on your thread myself.

Thank you very much for your understanding. We'll be with you very shortly.

Hello Brian,

Thank you for responding to my request for assistance. I appreciate any and all help offered by CKing123. I have no problems whatsoever with delays as I understand the importance of gaining real-world experience.

Thank you again.

Hello Geopla and :welcome: to Sysnative! SFC scan was clean, so we will run SURT for more information:

System Update Readiness Tool (SURT)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log

Hi CKing,

Thank you for the welcome, and for your assistance.

Please find the CheckSUR.log below as you requested. Also, please note that I have run the Windows automatic Fixit tool in an attempt to resolve my issue. No joy.

Thank you again for your assistance.

Hello geopla!

The System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) did not find any errors

Thanks bazer!

We will run a repair of Windows Update:

[COLOR=9000]Repairing Windows Update[/COLOR]

Please download Windows Repair All-In-One
After it is downloaded, right-click on the zip file, and click Extract All...
Click Extract

Now, run Repair_Windows.exe

Go to Repairs tab

Now, click Open Repairs

Click Unselect All, and then only checkmark these:

Code:
03 - Reset Service Permissions
04 - Register System Files
17 - Repair Windows Updates
21 - Repair MSI (Windows Installer)

Now, choose to restart, and click Start Repairs
Note: It can take some time for the repairs, so please be patient.

Once the repairs are finished, allow your computer to restart

Now, try checking for updates (For the first time, it will intentionally take a long time to check for updates, but after that, it should be fixed)

Hello CKing,

I downloaded and ran the program exactly as requested, twice. First I ran it in Normal Boot, and then I ran it in Safe Mode with Networking. The program completed successfully each time, however; there was no change. The“checking for updates” bar continually moves and never stops.

I should also mention that on the Windows Update page, the default setting is“never check for updates”. I have changed it to every possible mode, each time stopping and restarting Windows Updates and clicking on apply, but it always defaults to the same mode.

Thank you again for your help.

Hello bazer!

We will repair a few more things

[COLOR=9000]Repairing using Windows All-In-One[/COLOR]

Run Repair_Windows.exe again
Go to Repairs tab
Now, click Open Repairs

Now, choose to restart, and click Start Repairs
Note: It can take some time for the repairs, so please be patient.

Once the repairs are finished, allow your computer to restart

Let Windows Update check for updates again. You should now be able to change the default setting of Windows Update
Note: Checking for updates will intentionally take a long time for the first time after the repairs have completed. After that, it will go back to the usual speed

Hi CKing,

After I ran the original fix yesterday morning (twice), I again let Windows search for updates while I ran some errands. Upon my return about 4 hours later, Windows had indeed found 21 available updates. However, it was stuck at “Creating Restore Point”, and it remained stuck for 2 more hours. After a bit of checking I discovered I had no available restore points, and I could not manually create one. I ultimately discovered the Windows Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) was not functioning, so I then ran the Windows Repair tool again. I only checked “repair Volume Shadow Copy Service”, and I let the computer reboot after the repair had completed. Upon reboot, I was pleasantly surprised to find a new restore point had been created, and that Windows successfully installed all of the updates.

After the second reboot Windows found a few other updates, and they too were successfully downloaded and installed. As of now Windows reports my machine is up to date, so it appears the issue has been resolved.

I thank you very much for your help with this issue, and for your prompt replies. I wish you the best of luck with your training. :thumbsup2:
