My system persisted in showing a green screen whenever I tried to play most videos.
I tried all the tricks on the web.

Interestingly, I didn't have a way to "disable hardware acceleration" when I right clicked on the videos

So, while trying to uninstall/reinstall my video drivers I figured that I'd check the videos again.
Once the ATI drivers were removed (uninstalled), the "disable hardware acceleration" thing came back.

I unchecked it and my videos are working again!!!
I hope that this tip will help others that are experiencing the same problem.

This had happened not when viewing videos, but after compiling with the Windows Media Video editor or whatever it was called in Windows 7 a while back for me. :)

That is a bit odd. Did the videos display correctly for awhile, then suddenly started messing up?

They worked fine since June (when I installed Win8 x64 Release Preview)
Stopped working about a month ago. I tried fixing it then (to include reinstalling the video drivers) and it didn't work
As I'm planning on a clean install of Win8 RTM, I didn't bother with it much.

Then when fooling around with it yesterday I managed to find the hardware acceleration thing in Flash (in between video driver installs)

FYI - I have a Radeon HD 4800 series video card - and ATI is being stubborn about making Win8 drivers for it. They have a "legacy" driver and that's really all. I'm shopping for a new video card tomorrow and will definitely go back to nVidia at that time.
