Hi Broholm,

Here I am :)

Windows Update Package Replacement

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Please download the attached file, Packs.zip and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Right-click on the file and select Extract All...
  3. Tick the box labelled Show extracted files when complete then click Extract
  4. A window will open showing two folders, Manifests and Packages
  5. Open the Manifests folder and copy the files into the following folder (if there are any files)

    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests

  6. Open the Packages folder and copy the files into the following folder (if there are any files)

    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages

  7. Run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again
  8. When the SURT finishes installing, copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of the SURT log into your next post please:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

You will probably be shown the error code 0x8024200D after performing this fix, if so, please download and install the update from this link.

Hi Tom

THank you for your help.

The SURT never completed the installation. It informed me that it was installing, but no Progress was shown. I tried installing the two security updates without any luck

I have attached the log file as you requested.

Hi Broholm,

Did it fail, or did it take a long time and you cancelled it? If the former, please upload this log:

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

If the latter, run it again please and let it run to completion. It can take several hours to complete in some cases :)

Tom

Hi Tom. Okay, obviously I did not have the patience. Sorry. I´ll let it run through the night and have a look tomorrow.

Thanks again :-)

Hi Tom

Everything has gone well. And I have run Windows Update again, and it installed a bunch of updates. (Yeaahh :-))

BUT, now it gives me the same error code 80073712 for another windows update...

Can you help figure out why it won´t install this update?

I have copied the CBS file to this dropbox folder: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/h25z4t1pn3f5kfy/IEH10AiSaV

Thank you very much for getting me this far :-) I hope you can bring me all the way :-)

Best regards

Broholm

Hi Broholm,

Yeah, I wasn't expecting that fix to fix the 0x80073712 error :) Whilst 0x80073712 was the one that was displayed, there were actually two errors and we've just fixed one of them. This error remains unfixed in your CheckSUR log:

Code:
(f)	CSI Could Not Open file	0x0000045D	winsxs\Manifests\x86_microsoft-windows-defrag-adminui_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17514_none_9b1d78a9ee870c74.manifest	x86_microsoft-windows-defrag-adminui_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17514_none_9b1d78a9ee870c74
(f)	CSI Repairing: CreateFile Failed	0x0000045D	winsxs\Manifests\x86_microsoft-windows-defrag-adminui_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17514_none_9b1d78a9ee870c74.manifest	x86_microsoft-windows-defrag-adminui_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17514_none_9b1d78a9ee870c74

0x45D translates to ERROR_IO_DEVICE:

Code:

  ERROR_IO_DEVICE winerror.h
# The request could not be performed because of an I/O device
# error.

C:\Windows\System32>

It's easy enough to replace that file, but I would first like to check your hard disk for errors:

chkdsk /f

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    chkdsk /f

  4. Reboot
  5. Download ListChkdskResult.exe (by SleepyDude) from the link below:

    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/12354842/My Tools/ListChkdskResult.exe
  6. Double click on it to run it. It will take a few seconds to scan, then it will open a Notepad window with the log. Copy and paste the contents of this into your next post please!

This is what we need to fix! We'll fix it as soon as we get the chkdsk results :)

There's a strange character in there (04 in hex) and I have no idea how it got in there.

How old is this hard disk? It might be worth replacing it and reinstalling Windows.

Tom

Hi Tom

I was also wondering about that 04 in hex but then again everything in that log confused me :-)

Not entirely sure about the age of the hard drive, but my guess is late 2009 which makes it 4 years old.

It is an Acer Aspire 5739G.

1. question: Can we fix the error so Windows can be updated?
2. question: Is the hard drive steadily getting worse?
3. question: Would you recommend replacing the hard drive or buying a new laptop all together?

THank you again for your big help

/Broholm

Hi Tom

Thanks, I will do that. Sorry for the long wait for the results. I have been away for a few days. The computer is running the SeaTool diagnostics now and as soon as it finishes I will run the other tool and post both results.

Thanks again for your time :-)

/Broholm

Hmmm okay...

The Seatool diagnostics tool completed the long test, but returned an error that one of the diagnostics test was unable to complete and did not show me any results. I guess it also tried to repair it also resulting in an error. It recommended taking a backup of the data on the disk and checking my warranty...

The ListChkdskResults.vbs script returned an error "Code" 800A0005.

What do you make of this?

/Broholm

Hi Broholm,

I have asked for a second opinion on the SeaTools result as it isn't really in my field of expertise. I will let you know as soon as possible.

Did ListChkdskResult mention which line the error was at? Usually vbs errors are something like this:

Line:6, Column:1, Error:(null), Code:800401E4, Source:(null)

The line and column would be greatly appreciated!

Tom

Hi Broholm,

Thank you! That's perfect :) Line 16 character 4 is where the fault is. I have passed this information onto the developer and I'm sure he is very appreciative of your help.

As hardware isn't a forte of mine, I asked a few of my fellow helpers for their opinions on this and the general conception is that you need to backup all of your data as soon as possible! Your hard drive is starting to fail and when they start to fail, things just keep getting worse. In response to your earlier questions:

1. question: Can we fix the error so Windows can be updated?

We could, but I'll come to this in a bit.

2. question: Is the hard drive steadily getting worse?

Yes, and it will continue to do so until it no longer works.

3. question: Would you recommend replacing the hard drive or buying a new laptop all together?

I would highly advise replacing the hard drive as soon as possible, but buying a new laptop will also solve the problem. There is no indication that anything else in your laptop is failing at this time, so replacing the hard drive should be enough, but you need to decide whether you want a new laptop or not. From a technical point of view, neither choice is much better than the other, so it's purely your preference :)

If you do choose to replace the hard drive, then I would recommend you reinstall Windows as you don't want to carry damaged system files across onto your new disk.
