Hi there,

I have a fresh installed Windows Server 2012 R2.
As soon as I try to install Windows Updates I get the following error:
80072F8F

Then I tried the Windows Update Diagnostic Tool from Microsoft.
It shows me the following:

What else can I do?
I am also in touch with the Microsoft Support for a Businiess Critical Case, but they try to tell me it is not Business Critical and they cannot help me.
It is my 3rd Domain Controller and one of my Sites is nearly offline right now ...

Please help me guys...! ;-(

Best regards,
Christoph

Hello Christoph, and welcome to Sysnative!

Commonest cause of this error is an incorrectly set computer date & time. Please check the date and time, including the year. See here for further details: HOWTO: Fixing Windows Update Error Code 80072F8F | Back in Hack

If that doesn't help, check the BIOS time, and if not that either, since this is a server, it could well be a problem with the network proxy server not allowing the authentication to happen. This is really rare though, and I've only seen it a couple of times. Since this only occurred on a clean install though, it's likely to be the system time.

Hi there and thank you for the welcome!

The Server was reinstalled last week.
The Date and Time Settings are correct and the Timezone too.
We are using a internalt NTP Server too, so the Server has exactly the same time as the rest of the System. The NTP Server is our Sophos UTM and it has definitely the right time settings otherwise our whole network would not work correctly.

The BIOS Time is alse correctly set because we enabled the "backwriting" from the OS to BIOS.

We have no network Proxy running, that would block any authentications ...

Any further ideas?

Regards
Christoph

Please download and install the root certificates package for Windows 7 from here (x64/x86 as appropriate): Microsoft Update Catalog

Most feature no UI at all, not even a confirmatory message box at the end. Simply run it and it will do its job.

Then, if still no joy, please follow method 4 at this KB article: The Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site does not appear, and you receive the following error message: "Initialization error 0x800A1391"
I know it doesn't list your error code, I'm just using the instructions for a fix which still applies.

Finally, please give Windows Update one more try, then zip up and upload C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log.

Thank you!

Richard
