Windows Update, "check for updates" fails with error: Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer.

Windows Update Service is not running - manually attempting to start the service results in error: Windows could not start the Windows Update service on Local Computer. Error 193:0xc1

SFC /scannow results indicate corrupted file: wuaueng.dll

Attempted to install full Windows Update Agent-7.6-x86.exe - no help.

Downloaded offline installer for Windows Readiness tool (chksur) (Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x86.msu) - this won't run as Windows Update service is not running - error: Installer encountered an error: 0x80080005 Server execution failed.

Unable to upload the entire CBS directory as it is 18.7 MB zipped. I've attached the CBS.LOG - This was originally over 100MB in size and I deleted it while trying SFC.
Please let me know what else from the directory you need.

Please help me get this issue resolved...

Thanks,
Rich

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Let's see if we can get you fixed up. Let's start with the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Step#2 - SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Items for your next post
1. SFCFix.txt
2. CBS.txt

I really appreciate you guys being there for people like me.
Unfortunately, I could not wait as this was a work PC - so I've used the 'upgrade' process (to the same version of Win7 SP1 Pro), which has fixed the windows update issue.

Please close this thread.
Again - thanks.
