Hiya,

I have a old laptop Toshiba Satellite U300 running Win 7 64 bit. I am pleased to have installed this OS on the machine which was originally running Vista 32 bit. Although performance is reasonable the surt tool has given the following report

I have found this file on my desktop PC. How can I transfer and install this missing file on the laptop?

Grateful for any help.

Regards

Andy

Have you looked for any windows 7 drivers/software from Toshiba for your particular model laptop? Have you installed all the MS updates?

Hello again :)

Simply copy both the .cat and .mum file into C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSUR\servicing\packages (create folders if needs be) and re-run the System Update Readiness Tool. SURT will copy them back.

Richard

P.S. You seem to be having a lot of issues recently. Are these all on your own system, or are some for friends/clients? If it's the former, you must have had some pretty bad luck recently!

Hi Richard,

Now thats a trick worth knowing! Will go thro the motions later today and success will be notified by posting the Solved sticker (I hope).

I'm a retired Dad and the news the XP will now longer be supported prompted me to put the word out to my son and daughter. The result is that I'm upgrading 2 old and abandoned laptops to run Windows 7.

My wife who retires next week will be adopting one, as her Dell Latitude work machine has to be handed in. The availability of cheap memory from China has really brought these machines to life and I also bought some OEM Win 7 reinstallation discs with authentic product keys going cheap. Progress has been great and with your help success is assured.

Many thanks once again.

Regards
Andy

PS I am a retired civil engineer used to muck and bullets. Mending computers is a much cleaner pastime!

Thanks for the info! Good luck with fixing them up :)

Yeah, the other one is you can repair manifests in the same way (C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSUR\winsxs\manifests).

Yes I've done all that with success and win7 64 bit is running fine. Note this machine is not supported by Toshiba for win7 (too old) but I proved it can be done! This sound problem existed before I did the update and is present when booting into either Vista 32bit or Win 7 64 bit.

I am becoming more convinced that it's a dry joint problem and I want to know where to stick the soldering iron?

Thanks
Andy

If this system does not work right, not sure anything was proven. Vista, W7 and W8 share the same driver database, but not all drivers universally support all 3 operating systems.

That said, this Toshiba driver page indicates Toshiba does support W7 (32 and 64-bit) on the U300 (select "Archive" for the Product type).

The missing catolog file (subject of this thread) has been fixed by using the solution offered by Richard above. The reference to the audio problem refers to the issue I have a thread running in Hardware Forum. Both operating systems are working fine except for this start up problem where the audio output device is not detected. When I go to Device Manager there is no component listed for Sound, Video and Game controllers? only after several reboots does the sound kick in and then its listed in Device Manager as this device is working properly.

Yes I agree the Toshiba archive support site does provide (and I downloaded them all) win 7 64 bit drivers for HDD protection, Bluetooth and DVD update and a Bios update (OS independant) but that's all c/w the vista OS drivers where you can get the lot. If you go to the Windows 7 driver download section Toshiba Laptop windows7 support page - Toshiba it doesn't list my machine.

Now how do you mark this thread Solved...........?
