Hello!

After encountering multiple errors, like when trying to create a system restore point I get error 0x80042308, or when attempting to use Windows troubleshoot for my wireless network I get error 0x80070490, I was suggested to use the SFC command. There are errors that can't be fixed even after 4 tries. It would be great if anyone could help!

I've attached my CBS.log. Thanks!

Hello, and welcome to Sysnative :)

Please download and install the System Update Readiness Tool from here: What is the System Update Readiness Tool?

Save it somewhere conveient so we can use the same download again later if necessary.

When it has installed (it may take up to an hour to do so), please upload C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log.

Thank you!

Richard

Hi, I'm extremely sorry for the double post, but

It's been quite a while waiting for a response, so I'm wondering is anybody still able to help me here (since Tom is on vacation), or must I post to another forum for a more quicker response?

Thank you very much, and again, sorry for the double post.

Hello again :)

I am so, so sorry I missed you. As you've worked out, I've been really busy :p

But...fix it now ready! (and if I get overloaded again, don't leave it any longer than 24 hours to bump the thread, but I'll try my hardest not to :) )

WARNING: This fix has been created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do not follow these instructions as you may cause serious harm to your computer.

Download a copy of SFCFixScript.zip attached to this post, and save it to your Desktop.
Then download a copy of SFCFix.exe from here: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/downloads/sfcfix/, and also save it to your Desktop.
Single click on SFCFixScript.zip and drag and drop it on top of SFCFix.exe. SFCFix will open and perform a fix for your corruptions.
A logfile called SFCFix.txt will open (and be saved to your Desktop). Please copy and paste the report into your next reply.

Then once done, please let me know if you are still having problems.

Thank you!

Richard

(NOTE: This is from the the second time I ran SFCFix.exe, as I accidentally closed the SFCFix.txt the first time)

I'm assuming I should try and run the sfc /scannow command again?
Thank you again, I'll be awaiting your reply :)

That looks great! Yes, please re-run sfc /scannow

"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but were unable to fix some of them."

It's still happening, and I ran it 4 times. I've attached my new CBS.log below.

I'll be awaiting your reply :) Thanks!

Hello again :)

I am actually slightly concerned. The two files I fixed for you in my last script are good, but you have a new corruption since then. This makes me wonder what is causing these corruptions as it seems not to be a one off event we can just overlook. It is possible that hardware is at fault. How old is this computer? Please run HDD diagnostics and let me know the result: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/hardware-tutorials/4072-hard-drive-hdd-diagnostics.html

Then use this SFCFix script to fix the new corruption.

I cannot run the HDD Diagnostics as Seatools for DOS boots up fine, but it can't detect my hard drive... Any help with this?

I have a Dell Inspiron N5110 laptop w/ Intel Core i3
Windows 7 Home Premium
and a "ST9500325AS Momentus 5400.6 SATA 3GB/s 500-GB Hard Drive"

Thanks :)

Please try SeaTools for Windows instead. Use a Short (5 minutes) & Long Self Test (up to ~2-3 hours), and a SMART Test (if available) (1 minute). Please let me know if any fail.

Thank you!

Richard

The "Fix all - Fast", "Fix all - Long" and "Short Drive Self Test" (sorry, I didn't know what to do so I did all of them) have failed. However, the SMART Test passed.
Does this mean I must purchase a new laptop as my hard drive failed?

Also, can I run the SFC fix now?

Thank you very much!

Yes, you can run SFCFix now :)

But...if you do have hardware failure, more files are likely to become corrupt. There is no point in us fixing any more after that one until any potential hardware failure is resolved.

How old is your laptop? Make and model number? EDIT: Forgot you mentioned it above. Please ignore!

It is certainly possible that you can replace just the HDD. But, that depends on whether its worthwhile for a laptop however old, how much a tech in your area is going to charge, whether you could do it yourself (some laptops make it quite easy, others not, so we'll have to see whether this is a slot in and out thing, or a really complicated complete strip down).

But...I am not a hardware expert TBH. I deal with SFC and Windows Update, but not really hardware. I really am not the best person to advise you, so can you please hang tight whilst I get someone who actually knows what they're talking about in this area to take a look? :p

Thank you!

Richard

Hi,

Have you run a chkdsk yet? If not, run one:

start>search bar>type cmd right click and select run as admin

Elevated CMD should now be opened, type the following:

chkdsk x: /f /r

x implies your drive letter, so if your hard drive in question is letter c, it would be:

chkdsk c: /f /r

Restart system and let chkdsk run.

If the drive is failing any tests in SeaTools, but continues to pass chkdsk and SFC with no problematic files, you'll want to contact the manufacturer if warranty is available for a replacement. I'd start backing up as well.

Regards,

Patrick

Hello :)

I bought my laptop 2 years ago, (I think October 2011).

The sfc /scannow has found no problems and so has CHKDSK. I'm guessing it's my HDD failure that is causing all my problems, as they are still present (e.g. "wifi adapter undetected")... sigh, I guess I can contact for a warranty replacement. I'm guessing it's because of forced shutdowns that caused such damage..

Again, thank you very much for your help, I've learned a lot :)

No problem. I wish you luck with the warranty. Please don't hesitate to ask us if you need any further help :)
