Hi All,

New here. Just posted in the introduction section.

Having a strange issue with a laptop. It had a virus last year, but was cleaned thoroughly. To my knowledge there is no more malware on the system. Multiple scans from various anti-malware programs as well as some manual cleaning took care of it. Laptop has been running fine since.

Windows 7 Enterprise, 64-bit
I have full admin rights
Windows updates are managed through our SCCM server

The other day, I wanted to install the native telnet client on my machine, as it was disabled by default. Not sure if it's normally like that, or if the system image I used (company image) had it set that way. Regardless, I navigated to the "Turn Windows features on & off". It was completely blank. I first decided to run a chkdsk, in which it ran fine and reported no issues. Here is where it get interesting:

Running sfc/ scannow will instantly yield a "Could not perform the requested operation" error. cbs.log is below.

Did some further Googling, and it's very hard to find information on my issue specifically as everyone's issues are different. I ran the System Update Readyness tool, and it too found an error which was not fixed. That log is also below.

One last thing, I was told to take a look at HKLM/Components/[something], but upon checking, the Components hive is completely blank! My guess is that this is damage that was caused by the malware on the system previously. It had also effected chkdsk and gpupdate in the past, but I had resolved those and they have been working perfectly since.

Any assistance on this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Hi XpLod3r,

0x80073712 can be caused by many different things and the severity of the problem varies significantly from thread to thread. Unfortunately you have a very bad, almost definitely unfixable, case of 0x80073712 but I'll have a look anyway, just in case.

Fortunately you've already done the first few steps so we can get to the fun stuff straight away! Can you follow these instructions to upload your COMPONENTS hive to us please?

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. [sfcfixdownload]Download SFCFix[/sfcfixdownload] (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the attached file, SFCFix.txt, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.txt - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a log should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u...s/~Generic/Collect/COMPONENTS/SFCFix.txt?dl=1

The output will look fairly blank but don't worry, as long as there's no errors I should receive the file.

What I'm hoping for, and is still an uncertainty at this point, is that your hive isn't actually blank. A hive that is showing as blank in regedit and throwing errors like these in the CBS log is either damaged so the subkeys can't be read (but they still exist) or is truly empty. If the data is still there, I might just be able to get it fixed (I've done this once in the past but there isn't a high success rate for this) but if the data is gone then our only option is to reinstall Windows, assuming there aren't any backups.

But anyway, enough of the speculation. Let's see this hive :)

Hi Tom!

Thanks for the help on this. Honestly it's not a huge deal if I need to reinstall, I was thinking that's my only option, as I tried to do a repair install previously and that too, failed.

Here's the contents from the script:

Code:
SFCFix version 2.2.1.0 by niemiro.
Start time: 2014-05-08 12:48:46.410
Using .txt script file at C:\Users\shaun.[removed-lastname]\Desktop\SFCFix.txt

Hi XpLod3r,

What name did you put into SFCFix when you submitted your log? There's a few logs that have come through with strange names and I have no idea which one is yours. If you can't remember, can you run the script again please?

Should be XpL0d3r. 0 is a zero if that helps haha.

If you need me to rerun it I can tomorrow.

Thanks!

Hi XpL0d3r (got it right this time!),

Sorry for disappearing on you, I've had exams over the past 3 days and have been so busy revising in the run up to those.

Hope things are working out a little better on Windows 8!

Tom
