I have a system, Server 2012 R2 that will NOT installed the Security Monthly Quality Rollup this month (KB4503276).

I had similar issues last month on a different system but the error code was not the same. My usual tips and tricks are not helping. I have an open ticket with Microsoft but that's going relatively slow. Hoping I can get some traction on here as well.

Error code is 8000FFFF.

I've tried the following so far.

1. Rename SoftwareDistribution folder
2. Install from MSU
3. sfc /scannow
4. dism restorehealth

MS has had me run some things as well but nothing is allow this to install. Attached is the current CBS log I sent to MS as well.

PLEASE HELP!

Hi,

I'm concluding other cases and then will take a look to your log.

Please provide the following files:

Retrieve the Components Hive
  1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file
  2. Please copy the COMPONENTS file to your desktop
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again
  3. Right-click on this file on your Desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your Desktop
  4. If file will is too large to upload to the forum please share the file using a service like Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, or upload to www.sendspace.com and just provide the link for the file here

Export Registry Hive (CBS)
  • download the script ExportCBSRegistry2.cmd and save it to the Desktop
  • right-click the file ExportCBSRegistry2.cmd and select Run as administrator
  • when the script ends a new file called SoftwareCBS.zip will be located on the Desktop
  • If the zip file is too large to upload to the forum please share the file using a service like Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, or upload to www.sendspace.com and just provide the link for the file here

Export Registry keys (SBS)
  • download the script ExportSbSRegistry.cmd and save it to the Desktop
  • right-click the file ExportSbSRegistry.cmd and select Run as administrator
  • when the script ends a new file called SoftwareSBS.zip will be located on the Desktop
  • If zip file is too large to upload to the forum please share the file using a service like Dropbox, Google Drive, etc. or upload to SendSpace and just provide the link for the file here

Hi,

Try this...

Install Update using Dism
  1. Please download KB4038792 http://download.windowsupdate.com/d..._e9ea069b7ce0fae45ef3e1d1679f17ea61fe0ee5.msu save the file to c:\windows\temp
  2. change the name of the update file to a smaller name Windows8.1-KB4038792-x64.msu
(keep the extension .msu in the end of the file name in case its visible if not ignore that)
  3. open the Command Prompt as Administrator (Tutorial)
  4. type or Copy & Paste the following commands line by line:

    cd /d c:\windows\temp
    expand Windows8.1-KB4038792-x64.msu -f:* C:\windows\temp
    DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:\windows\temp\Windows8.1-KB4038792-x64.cab

  5. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
Restart Windows to complete this operation.
Do you want to restart the computer now (Y/N)?
  6. Make sure to allow the computer to restart if prompted.

If you receive any other message:
  7. Right-click on the Command Prompt window and click Select All, this will invert all of the colours by selecting the text, now press enter. All of this text is now copied.
  8. Paste (Ctrl+V) it into your next post please.

Note: If DISM fails please attach the CBS.log

Hi,

SFCFix Script

!!! WARNING !!! The following fix is only relevant for this system and no other, applying this fix on another computer will not work and most likely will cause problems...
  • Download SFCFix.exe (by Niemiro) and save it to the Desktop
  • Download the file SFCScript.txt, attached below, and save this to your Desktop
  • On your Desktop, make sure you have the two files:
    myjIXnC.png
    SFCFix.exe and
    8RAhYFg.gif
    SFCScript.txt
  • Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it
  • The SFCFix tool will process the script
  • Upon completion, a log file SFCFix.txt should be created on your Desktop
  • Open the SFCFix.txt log and copy & paste the contents to your post

Here are the results. Side note, there was not an HKLM\COMPONENTS key in the registry prior to running this. Not sure if that's normal or not. Should I try to update now or is this analysis only? Thanks!

MS ended up getting me a solution, I tried the install anyway on a backup of the bad version of the disk, it still failed.

The solution was to correct missing data for a REG_SZ registry value under this key:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\ComponentDetect\amd64_microsoft-windows-p..i-ntprint.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_0.0.0.0_en-us_f2f68292b685eb6d

REG_SZ value was:
Package_1026_for_KB4499151~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.9.4499151-1589_neutral_GDR

Missing data was the same as other values in that key:
6.3.9600.18790@4

Looks like a VMware Tools upgrade messed up our system, we did it last month on this system, and that one little registry value was mucking things up.

Thank you so much for your help, I'm sure you would have pinpointed it, that I have no doubt of! This forum is great!
