Hey guys,

I've been working over on Tom's Hardware forums with one fellow for the past several days. He's been a big help but we have yet to figure out what's causing my random BSOD on my Windows 7 Media PC. If you don't mind, I'd like to link you to that post, and some other diagnostic files I've uploaded, so you can read through everything I've tried so far:

My Tom's Hardware Post
My latest zip collection of mini-dumps
AutoRuns and Windows Error Reporting Diagnostic Files

My System:

1. MI-008 Tower Black P4 Chassis with 250W
2. ASRock Socket FM1/AMD A75M-ITX
3. AMD A6-3650 APU with AMD Radeon 6530 HD
4. Patriot Memory Torqx 2 Series 32 GB
5. Kingston ValueRAM 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 (one stick)

I did read the BSOD Posting Instructions thread here but I got several BSODs while trying to run jcgriff2 BSOD File Collection app. I will try the HDD Test and RAM Test programs you have listed there when I get home tonight. Although, I should say I did run memtest a couple days ago to 200% and there were zero errors. Perhaps I'll try that BSOD File Collection again as well. However, you may find enough system information from the attachments in My Tom's Hardware Post.

The last thing I did was run a malware scanner here: Free Online Virus Scanner | ESET. It got to 99% and then gave me a BSOD before reaching 100%. There were zero errors/malware found before the BSOD occurred.

I hope this information can help us get started. Please let me know if you need any other information at all! Thank you all so much!

Hello and welcome to Sysnative!

If you can get the BSOD File Collection App to run, that would be great, it provides lots more information. :)

Software Recommendations

Please correct me if I'm wrong (I very may well be), but I see no A/V installed on your machine. I understand that it's malware free (You said you scanned with ESET in your first post), but I still recommend having a realtime anti-virus program installed. Please install Microsoft Security Essentials

BSOD Recommendations

BSOD dumps are indicating a hardware issue.

Please go ahead and runn RAM and HDD diagnostics and report back the results:

RAM - Please run Memtest86+ to check your RAM. A tutorial on how to do this is available here: Test RAM With Memtest86+ - Sysnative Forums

HDD - Check your HDD for errors using Seatools. A tutorial for this is available here: Hard Drive (HDD) Diagnostics - Sysnative Forums

Regards,
Stephen

I ran 13 of the latest dumps and there are 5 different named causes.

I would start by running driver verifier to see it pokes a rouge driver like the AMD overdrive AODDriver2.sys driver.

If that does nothing run Memtest+> D/L Memtest+ burn it to a CD using a free program like Imgburn if you need one then boot from the CD to test the ram, let it run for at least 6 passes or until you see an error.

Thanks for the replies so far guys. Here's my list of objectives so far that I'll try tonight:

 1. Install Microsoft Security Essentials since I don't have any A/V Software at all
 2. Run Driver Verifier to make sure there aren't any rogue drivers around like the AODDriver2.sys driver
 3. Try to get BSOD File Collection App to run again and post results here
 4. Run MemTest86+ again (probably overnight). Already did this to 200%, but it sounds like I need to let it run to 600% to make sure.
 5. Check my SSD drive by using Seatools as shown here.

I have just one question:

 1. Should I run the Seatools hard drive scan on my SSD and my 1TB External Hard Drive that is connected all the time by eSATA cable? Is it possible my external hard drive could be causing some issues?

Thanks for all the help. Much appreciated.

Sorry, I didn't realise you had an ssd.

Hold of on the hdd test for now, they're not for SSD's. I have some ssd troubleshooting steps on my laptop, but I'm only on my tablet right now and can't get to them.

Stephen

For now unplug the external, if its not plugged in and it still BSOD's you can safely assume it was not caused by the external drive.

What is the brand and model of the ssd?
Have you checked for firmware updates for ssd?

Yeah, I unplugged it this morning and got a BSOD shortly after.

[h=1]Patriot Memory Torqx 2 Series 32 GB SATA II 3.0 Gb-s 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive PT232GS25SSDR is the brand and model. [/h]
I just searched the Patriot Memory support page and found my SSD. The only driver/firmware updates listed are:

Torqx 2 TRIM Utility Beta
02/09/2012
N/A
Download

Utility sounds like not a firmware update. Just some extra bloatware, am I right? Plus it came out before I bought the SSD anyway. Some other Google Searching led me to Forums where people said there isn't a firmware update available for that particular model.

No there is not a update for that model, which is ok update are only issued to correct problems no updates usually means no problem to fix :).

Lets see if verifier shows us anything, the .dmp file created with verifier running will usually have more detail in it.

Wow, do I really have to run Driver Verifier for 24 hours straight like it says?

First off, sorry I cant answer your above question out of my area of expertise...

Secondly, what FW is your SSD running?

The last update I found came out in 2010 which means you are probably fine... http://patriotmemory.com/support/firmware.jsp (not sure what wrench found above)

I experienced similar issues a while back... First thing I would do, update your bios if you haven't already.

next would be ram followed by drivers.

In the past I have always ran memtest for hours... when I first built my system a few years back I had faulty ram that wasn't detected until multiple hours in.

I have never had to run driver verifier for very long but, at the same time I cannot say it is a bad thing...

Best of luck with your system!

I'm sure these guys will get everything sorted out :thumbsup2:

I imagine it's running the only FW version available that came with my SSD since there's nothing else available? Is there some way to check what exact version it is?

Okay, I also tried running BSOD File Collection App 6 times. Each time, a quarter of the way through, it gave me a BSOD (IRQL one.) I tried it in Safe Mode, Safe Mode With Networking, and Regular Mode. It looks like getting this information won't be possible. Sorry guys!

I'll try to update the BIOS Version tomorrow. I'm going to let Driver Verifier run until we get a BSOD then I'll see you that dump file.

Speaking of updating BIOS... does anyone have a really good guide on that? I've always been freaked out about updating the BIOS because you have to flash a USB or whatever it is... any clear instructions there would be so helpful.

Finally, I'll try running memtest overnight tomorrow and see what we get.

Thanks everyone!

Hi -

The jcgriff2 BSOD collection app failed (BSOD) 4x? That tells me you are more than likely dealing with unknown hardware failure here.

Run memtest86+ as others have suggested - 1 stick at a time; alternate the slots.

The BSOD bugchecks indicate RAM instability to me - whether it is RAM itself or other unknown hardware failure affecting RAM's inability to properly hold kernel code is not known.

One dump had bugcheck 0x24 which tends to point to the SSD or perhaps the USB external.

How old is the SSD?

Regards. . .

Should I turn off the driver verifier program then and just do memtest instead? Is that more important right now?

I only have one stick of ram (4 Gigs) and the only other slot is inaccessible because its blocked by the CPU Fan. This media pc has a really cramped case.. ;) So I can only test this one stick of RAM in the only channel it can be put into.

Also, when I query the Driver Verifier program it says 'No drivers are currently verified.' Does that mean its running in the background and just hasn't found any errors yet or does that mean its not running?

The SSD will be a year old in 6 more days. I ordered it from Amazon just about a year ago.

To answer your earlier question: ASRock - BIOS Upgrade Instruction

However, reading over the build logs they really haven't done very much since version 1.20.

If you are newer than that and still have other things to test I wouldn't stress it.

A75 Motherboard Series Manufacturing - ASRock Inc.

The BIOS version and FW version of your SSD are usually listed in bios if you are curious.

Let us know what the memtest results look like and we can go from there. That's the first priority.
