I am thinking I got a virus/malware, but nothing shows up with any scanner. I want to re install the whole system. The DVD cannot find original C: drive, even if bios shows it is there on boot.
Install does not / can not create a boot partition on any other drives. The original C: drive has a 100 meg partition for windows 7, not sure why, but I can not fix, find, format, fdisk or any other way to make a drive valid for setup/install. please explain what I need to do, or why it is happening. I have tried to use the system tools "advanced" feature to re-install windows 7 It didn't work either.

Is this a branded PC?
If so it may have a recovery partition.
The 100 meg partition is not the install partition but may be the recovery partition though a little small.
Are you booting from the Win7 install DVD?

Are you booting from the Win7 install DVD?

This is an assembled system by me, new mb, mem, processor & new DVD, hd's are my old drives, The C: drive was partitioned and formated with the win 7 dvd. I have tried booting with DVD as well as utilizing the restore information. There seems to be something blocking the C: disk when I use the DVD to install. I only get my drive D- labeled c: and my E- labeled d: when I use the DVD to install windows 7. The drive does not show up in setup although it shows in bios.

Sounds like the drive was installed in a different setup previously?
Was the drive the only drive in the old system?
If not the boot rec may have been on the other drive, do you need the data on other partitions of the drive?

I built the new system using old HD's. The old system had c:\ = 1tb d:\ = 1tb e:\ = 2tb new system is c:\ = 1tb d:\ = 2tb E;\ = 1tb
I have two 1tb and one 2tb they are formated & partitioned as individual drives. Windows 7 repartitioned C: as 100 meg and 931gb then formated 931gb in nt, I have no idea what the 100 meg is for. Boot record should be on c:\ but not sure where it is.

Hi, one_unique_guy.

What makes you think your computer is infected? If you'd like, you can run the tool as instructed below which will back up and scan the MBR.

Please download aswMBR and save it to your Desktop.
  • Right click aswMBR.exe & choose "Run as Administrator" to run it.
  • Click Yes to the prompt to download Avast! virus definitions.
(Please be patient whilst the virus definitions download)
  • With the AVscan set to Quick Scan, click the Scan button.
(Please be patient whilst your computer is scanned.)
  • After a while when the scan reports "Scan finished successfully", click Save log & save the log to your desktop.
  • Click OK > Exit.
  • Note: Do not attempt to fix anything at this stage!
  • Two files will be created, aswMBR.txt & a file named MBR.dat.
  • MBR.dat is a backup of the MBR (master boot record), do not delete it..
  • I strongly suggest you keep a copy of this backup stored on an external device.
  • Copy & Paste the contents of aswMBR.txt into your next reply.

Corrine: I was burning cd & dvd disks fine for 3 months, then I put in a blank cd to make a music disk and computer shuts down, no BSOD information!
I can run the computer, restart the computer just fine but cannot burn anything, I cannot even use some programs on cd/dvd anymore even though they are win 7

That doesn't sound like malware, one_unique_guy, at least not the malware I've helped people remove. :)

Do you have all the same drives in the new system?

all drives working fine? all same from old system, different configuration though. system working fine, I think, but unable to burn anything with either of the DVD rewriters I have. Think its a virus or malware.
When I insert a blank CD the computer shuts off, no information on BSOD then computer restarts, I am at the point of re-installing everything to find the problem.

CORRINE: Any other ideas what would cause this problem?
not much was wrong when I first got into this.
Please check my post in BSOD win 7 maybe you can think of something.

Hmm does it shut off as the CD/DVD drive spins up?
Have you checked the voltages for the 12v, 5v and 3.3v in the Bios on the Hardware Health page?

Was not aware of any issues, but it shuts down after recognizing the type of disk, also cannot burn any other types of disks. after starting burn in windows media player the computer shuts off. I get a blank BSOD then restart.
Please check post in BSOD ____ ____ ____ computer shuts down when inserting blank cd.

Here is what I would do...

Physically disconnect all drives except the O.S. drive (power and data).
Make sure the OS drive is in SATA port '0' (saves a bit of headache with multiple drives IMHO)
Boot and enter the BIOS. Check to make sure the drive is recognized.
Check your voltages on the system health page all voltages should be steady and withing 5% of rated value. (if any voltage is way off or fluctuating alot, report the voltages).
If all is okay in voltage land, boot the computer to the OS drive. (don't reinstall Windows yet)
Try and perform a task with the optical drive that would cause the computer to shut down... What happens?

I am atempting to wipe, Quite possible infected with virus/malware. Is this a program I can use in "DOS" area before system starts? "ie windows"

Yes - KillDisk = DOS based.

Was the drive the only drive in the old system?

Connect just 1 HDD; wipe it wth KillDisk; install Windows 7 - then after installation connect the others.

Do they show up in computer?

Check device manager are the DVD drives listed and displaying "This device is working properlY?
