Hello,

During the last weeks i have been experiencing BSOD failures opf the 124 type. I have bought the laptop second hand. A few months back I have contacted HP to receive the original windows 7 professional dvds and installed the oem software.
I have since removed one 4 GB memory module because it caused the system to reboot when i picked the laptop up from the table. That solved that problem.

This is not a new machine , but it meets my needs. I would be glad to be able to continue working on it.

· OS - Windows 7 pro
· x86 (32-bit) or x64 ? x64
· What was original installed OS on system? windows 7 pro
· Is the OS an OEM version (came pre-installed on system) or full retail version (YOU purchased it from retailer)? reinstalled oem version
· Age of system (hardware) 12-11-2011
· Age of OS installation - have you re-installed the OS? 5 months

· CPU
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2820QM CPU @ 2.30GHz
· Video Card
NVIDIA Quadro 1000M
· MotherBoard - (if NOT a laptop)
· Power Supply - brand & wattage (if laptop, skip this one)

· System Manufacturer HP
· Exact model number (if laptop, check label on bottom)
HP EliteBook 8560w, serial nr 4CZ145009F

· Laptop or Desktop? Laptop

Thank you JcGriff2,

I have just ran a prime95 test for about 1.5 hours. It ran fine, CPU temps up to 99 degrees Celcius though. But when I stopped the prime95 test --> BSOD, after rebooting and logging in, again BSOD.

Any ideas?

Thank you very much for your help.

Pim

Copy the new dumps from \windows\minidumps to Documents; zip them up & attach to your next post.

I just want to see if they're 0x124 or not.

Regards. . .

jcgriff2

p.s. As far as the 0x124 BSODs go, you could be dealing with hardware failure involving PSU, motherboard or other hardware part that is difficult to test. The dumps cannot tell us as they simply don't contain such information. Furthermore, you have a system suffering from unknown hardware failure writing memory dumps -- how accurate can the info in them really be?

Only external testing and the installation of new parts can help solve this. It's like taking your car to a mechanic and saying "I heard a noise...." - of course the noise is not currently heard, so the mechanic has nothing to go on.

Unfortunately both failures have bug check 0x124. Please see the attached txt file from bluescreenview. I will be running further tests, though I am affraid I will be looking for a replacement. I do not have spare components I can swap to find the source of the failures. My gut tells me it has something to do with heat and the processor not throthling down after the test. After the reboot due to the second bsod last night the processorspeed and temp in speccy remained high while I was not doing anything on the system.

thank you.

Someone recently told me that high temps on an idle system with no 3rd party apps running may involve the heat sink - it's what keeps the temps down.

I have a laptop here with the same problem - immediate high temps; fans going at high speed, but nothing whatsoever running. However, I do not get 0x124 BSODs.

Hi Pimsky,

Just to corroborate with what jcgriff2 has said, the first bugcheck argument being 0 in a Stop 0x124 means that it is a processor type error, we can see that it is a Machine Check Exception.

Since you already ran Prime95 and experienced the crash again shortly after, that would suggest hardware failure; certainly sounds like overheating based on your description. You're already on the latest BIOS version for your laptop (68SVD Ver. F.60), and your CPU isn't overclocked:
Code:
1: kd> !sysinfo cpuspeed
CPUID: "Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2820QM CPU @ 2.30GHz"
MaxSpeed: 2300
CurrentSpeed: [COLOR=#008000]2294[/COLOR]

Given the age of the laptop, it seems like a safe assumption that you're well out of warranty. Depending on how comfortable you are with computers, you could try taking apart your laptop and seeing if the vents/CPU fan need to be cleaned. If it's very dusty in there, it could be causing you to overheat. HP's recommendation is just to blow compressed air into the vents, but it would be more thorough to take the back plate off and carefully remove any visible dust in the CPU fan or in the vents.
