Could someone help me get past a stressful moment, please? I am starting to get a bit worried here. Windows has been configuring for way over 30 minutes now (since 4:20pm CST). What I did was right clicked to uninstall KB3035583 (yet AGAIN!) clicked restart now and the "thinker orb"continues to spin as if lost in thought and I do believe it is stuck on

Preparing to configure Windows...
Do not turn off your computer.

Should I just leave it as is to see what happens. I do believe that if I reboot the laptop at this stage it will become corrupt. Right? :banghead:

Maybe I should include that this is a new, larger HDD and a fresh install with an OEM disk (recovery partition intact). And also, just before I uninstalled KB 3035583, I did run the GWX Control Panel[/b].

If it's been on this for over 30 minutes I agree it is stuck. I don't think you have any choice but to power off your machine and then back on. If you are lucky it will pick up where it left off. It shouldn't leave your machine corrupt. It's designed to recover gracefully.

Powering down the computer during an update when it is already stuck rarely breaks it. Chances are high you'll get away with it and it will recover gracefully as it is meant to. Especially on Windows 10 and to a certain extent Windows 8.1, it does this fantastically effectively - it's getting really, really rare to see it fail to recover. Windows Vista and Windows 7... less so, but you'll usually get away with it :)

Thank you Brian. You're right. I didn't have much choice but to power it off which I did and it did pick up where it left off then proceeded to boot into Windows. I was really sweating bullets there for a minute. This GWX upgrade is getting on my last nerve only because my son had a very bad experience with the upgrade on his 8.1 which cost him BIG bucks to fix.

I do believe that all is better for the time being. Again, thank you so much for holding my hand in this stressful moment.

Hi Richard :)

This was my W7. For a moment I was experiencing what I went through with my sons W8.1 that he allowed to upgrade and it got stuck on Preparing to configuring Windows for over 3 hours before he called me wondering what to do. I told him to power it down and it got stuck on a repair reboot loop thing. I felt like I was reliving this travesty. I ended up having to send it back to ASUS and have the HDD reloaded since he hadn't created the USB recovery media. Maybe his was a one a one in a million situation.

Maybe his was a one a one in a million situation.

It's a much...much higher percentage. I've had this exact thing happen on 3 different machines. I've upgraded around 30 of them.
Yes, Brian, due to the horror stories I have read, just the thought of upgrading makes me shiver.... When I decide to add W10 to my collection of OS's, I'll go buy a new computer with it installed on it.
