Office 2013 Must Balance Mobile, Desktop Needs

Microsoft revamps Office for Windows 8

A customer preview of Microsoft's new Office suite has gone live just a few months before Redmond officially launches its flagship Windows 8 operating system.

The latest iteration of Office features an intuitive design clearly targeted at touch-oriented Metro tablets as well as traditional desktop PCs.

According to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, the new Office is social and "unlocks modern scenarios" in reading, note-taking and design.
"We are taking bold steps at Microsoft," Ballmer said at a press conference in San Francisco.

"The new, modern Office will deliver unparalleled productivity and flexibility for both consumers and business customers. It is a cloud service and will fully light-up when paired with Windows 8."

Office 2013 beta review: Microsoft (almost) nails it

The just-released beta of Microsoft's Office 2013 gives the application suite one of the biggest aesthetic facelifts the package has ever received, with a flatter, Windows 8 Metro-like look, Ribbonless operation for those who favor a cleaner interface, better integration with the cloud, and a number of features designed for tablets and touch devices. The look of the new suite fits right into Windows 8, but works just as well on earlier versions of Windows.

Office 2013 banners show up in SF ahead of Microsoft announcement

We had previously heard that Microsoft's surprise press conference was going to be about Office 2013 and new banners spotted in San Francisco (the location of today's announcement) would appear to confirm that information.
The images were posted up on ithome, a Chinese site, clearly show the Office logo with one banner exposed and the other appears to be covered. The new Office icon lines up with previous leaks and reinforces the fact that today's announcement will be Office related.
