Is there such a thing as a 'Non Destructive Update Reinstall Work Around for Windows 7 Pro SP1 64 ?

By this I mean, bypassing the compatibility message that stops me from applying Update (retaining user settings & pc setup/ programs etc) due to my install dvd being the same as the current installed OS . Leaves me with the alternative option via Custom Install over existing installation (no format) that creates a copy of the old pc details & installs a new OS.

Could I perhaps trick it by removing the built in SP1 or something ?

Hi,

As far as I know there isn't a custom installer for windows. They just give you the installer and you work with what you've got.

You have two choices. One is unlikely to be successful, the other so much work you'd likely be better just biting the bullet and clean installing.

1) Uninstall SP1 from your current computer [is often not possible, with a risk of catastrophic failure. Make sure to backup all data first just in case].
2) Slipstream SP1 into your current DVD: Slipstream Windows 7 SP1 Disc: The Complete Guide [lots of work]
3) Borrow an SP1 disk from someone?

My disk includes SP1 so I don't think it can be uninstalled but I wonder if its possible to rename the pc details, so the pc thinks its VISTA 64 for a one time (doing this would likely damage the pc installation to a not repairable state) reboot into the instal dvd process where the windows instal will allow an Upgrade Installation! I feel I've read about something like this but my memory fades !
